How to Practise Pranayama
Yoga is the union of individual consciousness with cosmic consciousness, the ultimate aim of human life. Various paths like Karma, Bhakti, and Rāja Yoga all lead to this same destination. To progress, one requires an experienced teacher, a knower of Brahman who can explain and inspire. The inner instrument, the antaḥkaraṇa, has four aspects: mind, intellect, consciousness, and ego. Three primary obstacles block progress: impurities, disturbances, and veils. The mind, like a river, cannot be controlled but must be gently directed through meditation and the guidance of the teacher. Prāṇa is the vital life force, indefinable, which divides into five primary and five secondary energies for bodily functions. Prāṇāyāma is the regulation of breath through inhalation, exhalation, and retention. This practice is potent and must be learned correctly from a master or a perfect guide to avoid harm and balance the body's energies. It requires disciplined, long-term practice for its benefits, which include calming the mind and balancing the hemispheres of the brain. Theoretical knowledge is insignificant compared to direct practice. The physical posture for practice must be straight and supported for correct breathing and meditation.
"Yoga is that power in the entire universe to balance space and consciousness, visible and invisible elements, to create harmony and oneness."
"Tons of theory is nothing compared to one gram of practice."
