The fire of doubts

A discourse narrating the story of Satī testing Lord Rāma.

"To see the better view, you have to climb high up on the peak of the mountain."

"Sooner or later, the reality will come out. Antaryāmī, the master, He knows."

The speaker recounts the episode where Satī, doubting Lord Śiva's word, tests whether Rāma is truly Viṣṇu by taking the form of Sītā. Lord Rāma, the all-knowing, gently reveals her identity, humbly addressing her and asking after Śiva. Humbled and ashamed, Satī retreats, after which Rāma compassionately shows her a divine vision to affirm His nature and alleviate her sorrow, revealing His omnipresent form with Sītā and all the deities.

When a small child insists on touching a fire with their hand and the parents refuse, saying, "Don’t do it, it’s hot, you will burn your hand," the child doesn’t believe it and wants to touch the fire. Only then do they know the consequence. But when one needs to do it, they say, "Try." Similarly, though Lord Śiva explained to Pārvatī, to Satī, she did not believe it all. She wanted to know more, and when you want to know more, then, according to your capacity, you will come to know more of the problems. So Śiva said, "Do it yourself then. I am sorry for you." Puni Puni Hṛdaya Vichāru Kari, Dharisita Kar Rūpa, Āge Hoi Chali Pānta Tehi, Jai Avat Narbhūpa. Syāvara Rāmachandra Kī, Pavanachaṭa Hanumān Kī. Satījī was thinking very much about how to proceed. For the play to be perfect, one must find the weak point or the dearest point of a person. How does one approach to see that reality? To see the better view, you have to climb high up on the peak of the mountain. Satījī thought, "How should I try to know if Rāma is really Viṣṇu or not?" She decided to make a test. Bar bar, again and again she thought. Finally, she changed her form into Sītā, because when Rāma sees Sītā, he will not refuse anything—to tell her, to explain to her, to speak to her, to accept her. Satījī changed her form into Sītā and went toward the way in which God Rāma was coming. She went on the path opposite to him, thinking, "The king of the humans, Rāmachandrajī, is coming." He, Brahma, Hṛdaya Viśeṣa Kahina Sakata Kasu Ati Gambhīra, Prabhu Prabhau Janata Mati Dhīra. Lakṣmaṇjī noticed. The Sītā had just changed her clothes. All is He. He changed the mask, the Pārvatī, into Sītā’s form. Lakṣmaṇjī came to know and wondered greatly: where was the necessity for Pārvatī to do this? In his heart he was confused. You see, one confused person confuses another, and that other confuses another still. Always when someone is confused, something happens. There is a story: one driver was driving a car, and his son was sitting inside. On the way, a rabbit came onto the road. The driver tried to protect the rabbit, but it kept running along the street. The rabbit tried many times, but finally it was killed. It was running sometimes left, sometimes right, sometimes sitting on the road. At the end of the journey, the boss asked the driver why the rabbit was killed. He said, "Sir, I tried my best to save him, but I couldn’t, and an accident happened." The master said, "Do you know why he died?" The driver said, "Yes, through an accident." "No," said the master. "He was confused. That’s why the accident happened, and he died." So when one is confused, mostly accidents happen. Always something happens in life. Lakṣmaṇjī was wondering; he became very serious. What to do? It was a very critical point. On one side, he was afraid of Śiva and of Pārvatījī. On the other side, he was afraid of Rāma because of Sītā. Such circumstances arise sometimes. Many great people, the wise ones, don’t know what to do. He couldn’t tell anything. Lakṣmaṇa, the wise one, controlled his intellect. He knew the nature of Rāma, so he just controlled himself for a while. Amitai, agyāna hoya sarbhagya Rāmu Bhagavāna, the knower of everything, seer of every heart, Lord of Lords, Devas, God Rāma. He also realized who was the real person in the cloth or the mask of Sītā. God Rāma—when one meditates on Him, repeats His name, all ignorance vanishes. Next, the Lord of Omniscience, Śrī Rāmacandrajī, the Omnipresent—what was He thinking? What did He see in front of Him? Sometimes you have to wait. Sometimes, before taking any reaction… but ignorance also has some kind of power. A trick is also a kind of vidyā, a knowledge. Not everyone can play the trick. Try, and very soon you will be caught. There are different talents. A woman’s nature always affects somewhere. Tulsīdāsjī said, "Women’s natures have always, somewhere, always some effects." How dare she do such a trick in front of the knower of everything, God? And she tried to hide perfectly, to play perfectly, that she was Sītā for God Rāma. He wondered at the power of Māyā in his heart. Māyā is also something. The woman is not only the māyā; I told you yesterday, a man is māyā for women. Māyā can be just one flower, māyā can be chocolate, māyā can be ice cream. In many, many forms, māyā can appear. Māyā is also powerful, very powerful. Many, many she has swollen. Many, many sense, like all of you have been witnessing, okay? God Rāma in his heart felt the power of the māyā, and He smiled. God Rāma smiled a little loudly. He smiled. And He spoke with very humble words. Kali Pira Hunkohi Hetu Maryada Purushottam Bhagavan Ram, the humble, the kind, the merciful Lord Rama. With folded hands, He made praṇām to Satījī. And not only did He tell her, "Satījī," but even He told the name of her father: "Pranaam, daughter of Dakṣa Satyajit." It is finally unpleasant when someone comes to know your reality, just in front of that reality which you want to hide. One man comes and announces that he is the president of that country, and just in front of the welcoming, they say, "Please move to one side." It’s not easy, no? Instead of saluting, they say, "Please, one side." To face the reality, sometimes it’s unpleasant. I told you this morning: to know the truth can be very unpleasant. Knowledge can bring many sorrows. Therefore, don’t try to play. Sooner or later, the reality will come out. Antaryāmī, the master, He knows. But Rāma didn’t want to offend her. But if you must offend, then offend nicely, in a sweet way. It is said: while giving chocolate, if someone dies… Giving sugar, if one dies from sugar, then unnecessarily, why do you give poison? You need not give poison. You understand me? You want to kill someone? That one can die when you give one spoon of sugar. Then why do you give the poison? Because the poison will be discovered very soon. So, it is the greatness of the Lord. Without offending her, saying "Praṇām." Can you imagine? What was the heartbeat of hers at that time? I think everything went high up: the blood pressure and everything. She was sweating, I think. What to do? And I think Śiva was standing there and smiling. On one side, he was sorry. On the other side, he said, "Well, here you are. I told you." But it is too late. There are certain things which you can’t bring back. Then the bullet is gone out of the gun. You can’t catch it back. The Lord folded his hands and said, "Praṇām." And He also repeated her father’s name: "Kāyā Hūm Bahorī Kām Braske Tū." And not only this, the Lord said, "Where is Lord Śiva?" This is called the practical evidence. When someone came to Mahāprabhujī, Mahāprabhujī said the person’s name, father’s name, from where he is coming, what is his problem, and where this problem can be solved. That’s called Antaryāmī. So, God Rāma said, "Where is Lord Śiva? Why are you wandering alone here in this forest, lost and lonely? Where is the Lord?" Rāma Bachana Mṛduguḍa Suni Upaḷā Ati Saṅkocha Satī Sabhīta Maheśa Mahī Chali Hṛdaya Baḍaso Chusi Avara Rāmacandra Kī Pavana Suta Hanumān Kī Jaya Gaṇapati Mātā Deva Bholo Bhāī Saba Santāna Kī Jaya. When she heard the humble words of God Śiva, she was so surprised. Endlessly surprised. No measurement. What should one say? She was frightened. Naturally, one is. All kinds of conditions awaken. And silently she turned away and went to God Śiva in her heart. She was so sorry. She was so sad. Because on one side, she didn’t believe in Śiva; on the other side, she had a doubt. And third, what she wanted to find out, she could have found it out in a different way, but she was angry with herself for playing tricks. "I didn’t listen and didn’t believe Bhagavān Śaṅkar. Out of my ignorance, I was having doubts in God Rāma. What will I say now when I come to Śiva?" Though she had feeling in the heart, now she must go back to Śiva. And when she comes there, what will she expect? Perhaps he will also smile and say, "How nice to be a Sītā." Maybe. So now her heart also has uncertain feelings. Certain situations we have in our life many times. "What will I say to Śiva? I didn’t listen to him, and out of my ignorance, I had a doubt about him." She was thinking and thinking. While doing this, suddenly, she felt so much burning in her heart. The doubt creates the fire. She had such unpleasant feelings, very unpleasant, dangerous fear of fire. Nija Prabhau, kasu pragati janava sati dikko tukmag jata aage Ramu sahit Sri Bhrata. The merciful Lord God Rāma realized the pain of Satī, the disappointment or the suffering of Satī. Now, God Rāma decided to play some māyā, to show some of His miracles, so that at least she gets a little peace. While going, Satījī suddenly saw that God Rāma, Sītā, and Lakṣmaṇa were passing by. When she saw this, at that time, because Rāma wanted to show Satī that yes, she can believe it is Viṣṇu, He showed her that form. Satījī had a suffering of the separation from Śiva and the pain from her own ignorance. Rāma wanted her to become free of this pain, free of these sorrows. The merciful Lord always takes care of the bhaktas. Then she turned back to Satījī and looked behind to see what was going on there. Suddenly, she saw that all the four brothers of Rāma are there, and Rāma and Sītā are in beautiful dress. Wherever she is looking, there she sees Rāma. Wherever she gazes, she sees that Rāma is sitting there, and many Siddhas, Yogīs, and Ṛṣis were serving Him. So that Siddha or the Satījī can at least have that proof that yes, it is the Viṣṇu. Perhaps he came to see. Not only that, but this one person is wandering alone in the forest with his brother, looking for Sītā, who has been kidnapped. Nothing is kidnapped. Who can kidnap something from Him? It is only His play, because God does not want to do it directly. He does always indirectly. He does always indirectly. Amit Prabhau Ek Mete Eka Bhadat Charan Karata Prabhu Seva Vibhida Beshdeke Saba Deva. Satījī saw there are many Śiva, Brahmā, Viṣṇu. All were more and more beautiful, more and more spiritual power, radiance, and she saw the different kinds of dresses, all different kinds of dresses, worn by different Devas, and they were making Charaṇ Seva of Śrī Rāmacandrajī. Vidhātṛ Indra, Dekhi Amit Anoop, Jehi Jehi Veśa Ajādī Sur, Tehi Tehi Tan Anoop, Syāvar Rāmchandra Kī Jai. She saw many, many countless beautiful Satīs. She saw many, many Brāhmaṇīs of Brahmā, and she saw many, many beautiful Lakṣmīs. In modern psychology, this will be known as a hallucination. So that’s what spiritual hallucination is. Wherever she looked, she thought, "I am the only one Satī," but she saw Śiva and many, many Satīs; Brahmā and many, many Brāhmaṇīs; Viṣṇu and many, many. In those forms where Brahmā and all devatās were, in the same forms were their partners there. All śaktis were there, all śaktians were there. Deke jahāta Raghupati tejete śakti nasaita sakula suratete, jīva cāracara jo sansāra deke sakala aneka prakāra. Wherever Satījī is gazing, looking, that many Raghunāthjī, that many Rāmacandrajī, or the Rāmas she could see. As soon as she sees, she opens his eyes, "Rāma, Rāma," everywhere Rāma. With Śaktis, with His Śaktis. And that many Devatās and Goddesses were there also. In this world, all creatures see so many different creatures. Everywhere, Shiva and Shakti principles. Where to go? Which side to move? Suddenly, you feel like you are lonely, you are lost. You are feeling you are lost. You are not lost, but you feel you are lost because you wanted to be lost. You are lost, and you are found. You lost, found yourself in loneliness. You understand? You were lost and found yourself again. Don’t make this mistake. Viṣṇupurī, okay? Sītā Saitarnā Besā Ghanerī—she saw many, many times God Rāma doing pūjās and ceremonies, but she didn’t see the different form of Rāma. But she saw, she saw with Sītā many, many Rāmas, but all the same. No changes. Because God has no change, always the same. What to do? What will you do in such a situation? If you want to make one step, it’s Rāma standing. If you move left, He’s standing. If you move right, He’s standing. If there, He’s standing. Rāma Sītā, Rāma Sītā. When she saw all this, she saw that it was Rāma, Lakṣmaṇa, and Sītā Jī. When she saw all this, she was completely frightened. No wonder. What to do now? Her heart began trembling. Here, feelings are always present. Anything happens suddenly; there is a beat. Now her heart has other feelings. Scared, she lost her consciousness. She did not know what was left and right, what to think, where to go, what question to ask. She forgot that she wanted to know what Vishnu is. Long forgotten, she didn’t want any more test. She closed her eyes, and I think we will do the same thing. Closed eyes means to become ignorant. Let happen what will happen, just close the eyes, at least. So she closed her eyes, and on the way, she just sat down. Baurī Biloke Unayan Ughāṛī Kasunādik Taha Dās Kumārī Puni Puni Nairam Padasisa Chali Taha Jā Rahe Girisa. After a while, carefully, with first one eye, then the second, carefully opened eyes. The daughter of Dakṣa, Satyājī, she opens her eyes and she sees nothing. I mean, she is not blind. She sees everything, but not Lakṣmaṇa, Sītā, and Rāma. Everything is peaceful. The thunderstorm is away. Māyā is gone. Then, in her heart, she bowed down again and again to the holy feet of God Rāma, and she went there where Lord Śiva was. She went back. Uslat Lini Parīkṣā Kavanvidhi Kauśalya Sabā Bāta Se Āvā Rāmacandra Kī Jai Pavan Suta Hanumān Kī Jai. Lord Shiva, he is also a jolly one, you know, sometimes. He is also very jolly. He likes many times to say something. As soon as she reached Shiva, Shiva smiled, he laughed and asked her, of course, first, "How are you? How did you? Did you find out? Who is that Rāma? And how did you make his test? In which way did you put him? In which questions did you put him? Be honest now, at least, and please tell me everything truthfully. How was it? What happened?"
