Narada cursed vishnu

A discourse on the story of Nārada's curse upon Lord Viṣṇu.

"You made me a monkey, and I tell you, when you will be in great trouble, only the monkey will help you, nobody else."

"O Merciful Lord! May my śrāpa, my curse, become powerless. I don’t want that to come true."

Swami Maheśvarānanda Purījī narrates the episode where the sage Nārada, having been tricked by Viṣṇu's illusion (māyā) into believing he was a prince, becomes enraged upon discovering the deception. In his anger, Nārada confronts Viṣṇu and curses Him to take a human birth, suffer separation from His wife, and be aided by monkeys. The Lord calmly accepts the curse, which was His will all along, and later dissolves the illusion, leaving a repentant Nārada to seek forgiveness. The speaker interjects with related stories, like the churning of the ocean, and explains the deeper spiritual context of the divine play.

Mahāmaṇḍaleśvarānanda, Śrī Svāmī Maheśvarānanda Purījī, Śrī Devpurījī... Yes, those two devotees of Śiva. Not Rudrākṣa, Rudra. Nārada said, "Go, and you will become Rākṣasas in the next life." Because you were laughing at me, now you have the fruit of your deeds. Do not make any more jokes about other saints like this. Muni jal dikhā rūpa nijapāva tada pihṛdaya santoshaṇayāva pharkaṭayādhara kopa manamahi padhi chale kamalapati pahi. Then the Muni, Nārada Muni, went to the water and saw his face. He regained his real form. Though he recovered his real beauty, still he had no santoṣa in his mind, no satisfaction. He was not happy. All that was temporary. The illusion was created, a dream was created by God, that’s all. Nārada’s eyelids were restless, and his lips were trembling, vibrating, and he was full of anger. Immediately he went to Viṣṇu. He is going, walking, running towards Viṣṇu—to take revenge. Offended, angry, disappointed, unsatisfied. The person is totally blind; now he has no buddhi to think over, only anger, anger, and the desire to take revenge. Thank you, now he is going to God Viṣṇu. Sadā anirbhabhu Viṣṇu deu śrāpa kī marhuna jai jagata morī upahāsa karai bichāhī panta mile dānu jārī saṅghāra māsoī rāja kumārī. He was thinking on the way: either I will give a curse to Viṣṇu, or I will commit suicide in front of him. I will kill him or me. Many times, a question comes to me: "Swāmījī, my husband is so angry. He says if I do this, then either he will kill me or himself." This is a sign of confusion. It is a sign of an unhealthy person, mentally not healthy. It is a sign of selfishness. There is no tolerance. There is no tolerance, no understanding. "Either I will give him a curse, or I will give my life. He made me look down in this world. He insulted me in this world." And on the way, the enemy of the Rākṣasas, the Lord himself, met him. Viṣṇu and Lakṣmī, both. That Lakṣmī was that same girl, the daughter of that king. Muni kahā chale vikala kī nai, sunata bachana yūpa jā ati. Krodha, māyā, basana raha mana bodha. The Lord of Lords, Bhagavān Viṣṇu, with very humble and sweet words, spoke to Nārada. With very kind and sweet words. "Oh," says Nārada, "where are you going? You look nervous. You look unhappy. Where are you going? So unhappy." And when Nārada heard these words from Viṣṇu, he was so angry. His anger became a thousand times stronger. Nārada, who was deluded by māyā, had no more good thoughts to think over in his intellect. Sakāhu nahi dekhi tumhare īrṣā kapaṭa viśeṣī mathatā sindhu rudrahi vairahu surana preri viṣpāna karahu. Nārada said, "Nārada īkṣor, Nārada īkṣor, you don’t like to see someone wealthy or happy. Viṣṇu, it seems you are jealous. You don’t like the other one to be happy or wealthy. At the time of the churning of the ocean, you made Śiva nearly crazy and gave him the poison to drink." This is another story of the Kumbha Melā, you know. The Devas and the Rākṣasas decided to gain the nectar out of the ocean, and out of that came the fourteen Ratnas. That was Kāmadhenu, the holy cow which gives ever milk; Lakṣmī; Airāvata Elephant; Uccaiḥśravas Horse; the bow and arrow; the conch; the beautiful jewel for custom money; the alcohol; and the nectar and poison. When the poison came, they did not know what to do with it. Wherever they threw it on the earth, the earth would be destroyed. They did not know how they could help themselves or who could help them. So Viṣṇu said, "Only Śiva can help us." All Devas and Rākṣasas went to Śiva and asked him, "Lord, suggest to us what to do with this poison." And the Merciful Lord Śiva said, "Give it to me, I will drink it." And so Śiva drank. There was fighting about the nectar. Now, who will get the nectar? The son of Indra took the pot of nectar and ran away. Deva said, "We will drink." And Rākṣasa said, "No, we will drink." It doesn’t matter who drinks it; they will be immortal. All were running behind immortality, and they tried to take away that pot of nectar. Was God Viṣṇu Himself in the form of Dhanvantari? He came out of the ocean and brought this pot of the nectar. So, where the fighting took place, there are some drops of the nectar that fell down, and that is what we are celebrating as the Kumbha Melā. So, in the form of our poster picture, at least you have on the picture the drops of the nectar. So, you know, I told you that everybody should have one poster, one or two at home. It is small or bigger. So Nārada, he was so angry at Viṣṇu and said, "You don’t like someone who is a little stronger or becomes wealthier. Even you try with a trick to give the poison to Śiva. And you took for yourself Lakṣmī, and you took this beautiful jeweled costume. You are tricky and selfish; you are always making tricks." Savaimānahī karahuma tuma soī balehī mandā mandehī bhalakarahuma viṣmayāharasa nahiyaka sudharahuma. "You are very independent or very free. There is no one over you. You have no boss in the entire universe, nowhere. You are the Lord of Lords. And that’s why you are doing whatever you like. What is good, you turn into the bad, and what is bad, you turn into the good. In your heart, you have no love, no mercy, no feelings. Karma, śubha, aśubha, tumahīṁ na bādhā. Abalāgī tumahīṁ na kāhū sādhā. You are cheating everyone. You become very fearless. And that’s why you have no fear or anything; you are cheating everybody further. Because good or bad karma doesn’t attack you, but till now no one has corrected you. Now is the time that I will correct you. Now is the time to pray. "Now, something you have not done well: you have entered a good house. That means, like a good person—like me—with whom you made this trick, you gave me the trouble. These are the fruits of your deeds. Till now, no karmas could attack you, but I tell you now it will happen. The body you took to defeat me or to cheat me, you will get the same body again. Oh, Viṣṇu, now you will get again the human body." God doesn’t like to come to these bodies very often, you know. Now he had to be born in the family of the king; he will also become king. And all this happiness and unhappiness will influence him and attack him. Apakārā kīnā tuma bhārī, nārī viraha tuma hovā dukhārī. "You made me a monkey, and I tell you, when you will be in great trouble, only the monkey will help you, nobody else. You will be known as a god of monkeys. And I tell you, you will be very, very unhappy because of your wife. You will lose her, you will miss her, and you will be so unhappy, like I am now unhappy. You haven’t done good to me. Therefore, you will also be very unhappy and in trouble because of your wife." The curse is given already. Viṣṇu is standing there and listening. And as much as Nārada is giving curses, he becomes relaxed. Viṣṇu is looking at Lakṣmī, and Lakṣmī is looking at Him. Selva Suld on mistake. It seems. Seems it’s on mistake. But Lord, it is His māyā. He knew why He is doing. And He knows what He has to expect. God Viṣṇu... Parasāha hī yama prabhubhāhubhinati kī nijamāyāke prabalta karasi, kṛpānī dilī nasī avara Rāmacandra kī pāvanasuta Hanumānakī. How merciful the Lord was. He didn’t give Nārada too much trouble to come till Veṅkuṇḍa. He made him already there, so that Dharada would not suffer too long in his anger. Lord Viṣṇu accepted this curse; he took it on his head. Inside, the Lord was happy. And he explained, or he requested Nārada, not to be angry. And God dissolved his māyā. There was no such beautiful city, no Viṣṇu, no Lakṣmī. God dissolves his māyā again. Pranatara tihāraṇa jaba Hari māyā dūrī nivārī naita Rāma naraja kumārī taba munī ati sabhīta Hari caraṇa gaipahī pranatara tihāraṇa. When God dissolves His māyā, there was no Lakṣmī, and there was no princess. Then the Muni Nārada, Ṛṣi Nārada Muni, he was very afraid. He realized this was only his illusion. He held the lotus feet of the Lord, the giver of happiness, the remover of troubles. "Protector of bhaktas, O Lord, protect me, protect me, forgive me. I did not know what I did. How could I give the curse to thee, O my Lord?" Tanto samtevi ogos kovet mogao tati kletuva marasa ho mama śrāpa kripāla mama icchā kaha dina dayāla. Main durvachana kahe bahutere kāhām̐uni pāpa mithahī kimi mere. "O Merciful Lord! May my śrāpa, my curse, become powerless. I don’t want that to come true." The Merciful Lord said, "Nārada, that was all my icchā. It was my will." Nārada said, "Lord, I said so many harsh words to you. How will I become free from this sin that I shouted at you? I was thinking negatively about you. How will I become free of this sin? Please, Lord, tell me the way. How to come out of this?" Japa hūṁ jaya Śaṅkara sat nāmā hoya hṛdaya turata viśrāma kona hī Śiva samāna priyamo re asi paratiti jāta jahuna janibhore. Merciful Lord Viṣṇu, with very humbleness and with kindness, full of mercy, is giving to Nārada a special Kriyā. Like Kriya Yoga, you know, through that Kriya, he can become free from sin. A special Anuṣṭhāna, Kriyā Anuṣṭhāna. That I will tell you tomorrow.
