VIISO0210B Life is a dream
Life is a dream, and the search is for the truth beyond it.
A yogi asked Shiva to know his divine illusion. Shiva showed him in a moment underwater. The yogi experienced many lifetimes—divine realms, a farmer's life, and numerous births as a nomad—living to old age and even becoming a king chosen by an elephant. He then dreamed of losing that kingdom and awoke back in the lake, having been underwater only seconds. This life is like that dream. King Janaka also dreamed he lost everything, becoming a beggar attacked by a dog before waking in his palace. He sought a guru to understand reality. Scholars failed. The crippled sage Ashtavakra entered, was laughed at, but then laughed at the scholars for judging his body. He taught the king that neither the waking world nor the dream is real; only the inner witnessing Self is the truth. Janaka became liberated. We wander through lives and beliefs until finding the true path. The disciple, like an unlit candle, receives light from the master and in turn becomes a light.
"Neither is this world reality, nor is the dream. Realities that Ātmā Sākṣī, the witness, who knows that I am dreaming and who knows that I was dreaming, who knows that I am in this world."
"On the day when the disciple, who does not yet have a lamp, reaches the master and gets the lamp, he becomes the master as well."
