1 Inner longing and discipline 2 Guru parampara is a highway

A spiritual discourse on seva, discipline, and the necessity of the guru lineage.

"Seva, Karma Yoga, purifies our Antaḥkaraṇa. If these are in balance and pure, spiritual development is there."

"Where there is no guru paramparā, one who is not initiated by guru paramparā, your yoga cannot be successful."

The speaker addresses a gathering, emphasizing the purification of the inner self through selfless service and disciplined practice. He stresses that the ultimate aim of yoga is self-realization, which is only attainable through an authentic spiritual lineage, contrasting it with self-made paths. The talk references teachings from Guru Nanak and uses metaphors of a boat captain and a mother bird to illustrate the guru-disciple relationship.

Hari Om. It is nice to be here again. I was looking forward to seeing you, and by the blessing of Mahāprabhujī, it came true. You have many blessings from India. We had nice satsaṅgs, especially in memory of our beloved Purī Gurujī, and Jadan Ashram, and all bhaktas who are there for Seva. They remember you and send you a lot of love from them. Seva, Karma Yoga, purifies our Antaḥkaraṇa. Antaḥkaraṇa means our inner functions like mind, intellect, ego, and consciousness. If these are in balance and pure, spiritual development is there. Seva should be done without any ambition. If there are ambitions or conditions, then your seva will not be accepted as a service, but as selfless duty. It is said, your yogic path will be only successful if you do the right karma. Many of you are trying very hard, but you are not successful, because the antaḥkaraṇa is not pure. Many of you lost your discipline. Many of you do not practice discipline. If you had practiced discipline, today you would have another level of consciousness. But to keep the discipline, you need discipline. And that discipline means inner clarity. If you do not have inner longing, you will not be successful. Many, many lives we have been suffering. We all went through immense pain. We went through many disappointments. We went through happy and unhappy situations. This must not be only in human life, but in other forms of life. And definitely, be sure that you have been in different forms of life, but now you have a human body, you have human consciousness. Therefore, you should utilize this. Time is not waiting for anyone, and nothing will be granted to you. You have to do it yourself. You have to gain this through your behavior—physical, mental, emotional behavior, social behavior. Otherwise, it’s a great pity that this human life will go away again without getting realization. Again, it will be the same thing. Again, it will be the same sufferings. So, don’t compare anything with anything. It doesn’t matter who’s who or what is being done. It’s not your matter. Your duties and your concerns should be your own realization. So purify your antaḥkaraṇa. That’s very important. And never give up practice. Āsanas are as important as meditation. Prāṇāyāma is as important as your mantra. Because āsanas and prāṇāyāmas keep your body and mind healthy and concentrated. As soon as you neglect your physical exercises, laziness will come. And the second will be that you will begin to neglect your spiritual sādhanā. And when you neglect spiritual sādhanā, the kuṣaṅga will come. So you will be more going to the kuśaṅgas, and that means you have lost. Mahāprabhujī said, "O mind, you lost everything with the kuśaṅgīs." So your life, your development, your achievement is in your hands. And time will not wait for you. So many Karma Yogīs are doing Seva in Jadān and waiting for you to come and do the Seva also. Also, you can do Seva here, so you have blessings from there. So today I will not speak more. That’s all. Purify your antaḥkaraṇa, give up your ego, your wrong ambitions, your doubts, and practice. 90% of those who are sitting here have neglected your practices. It’s a pity, and that’s only for you. If you neglect, it’s for you. If you practice, it is for you. If you lose, it is yours. If you gain, it is yours. If you will go again, animal life is yours. Will be put in the torturing farms. Or you come as a human, or you get Divine Salvation. It is very personal and very personal. Only and only and only is yours. Neither husband, nor wife, nor children, nor parents will share with you. Only you have to do it. That is my message again. Yoga is yoga. It is, according to Yoga in Daily Life, our experiences, my experiences, yoga is something which is balancing the universe and universal consciousness. All elements in this universe, in the endless universe, visible and invisible, are balanced through one principle, and that’s yoga. Created and balanced the five elements through which our body is created. All the thousands of different systems in this body are balanced by one; that’s yoga. Kṛṣṇa said, "Time to time, I manifest it through my yoga śakti." It means nothing can take place without that yoga śakti. And the origin and author of the yoga is Svayambhū, Śiva himself. Yoga is inherited from the spiritual sages. That divine light of yoga is kept by the spiritual heritage, the spiritual lineage. Where there is no guru paramparā, one who is not initiated by guru paramparā, your yoga cannot be successful. It means not the āsanas and prāṇāyāms. The aim is self-realization, ātmajñāna, to become one with the Brahman, only and only. Through the spiritual transcendence of the Master’s consciousness into the disciples. It’s a long process, and the disciple has to be ready. There is no question why and how. There is complete surrender. Time brings the answer. In time, the embryo develops and is born as a beautiful baby. And so, that consciousness of the disciple is the embryo in the womb of the master. It means the consciousness of the master. And so, only if you are connected with the spiritual lineage of the masters. There are some so-called self-made masters. These are only the footpaths in the forest, which cannot lead you far. But the spiritual lineage is the highway without obstacles. Therefore, it is said, "Gurū Kṛpā Hi Kevalam." And that’s why Yoga in Daily Life is developed, and it is authentic because it has the background of the spiritual lineage. And that’s very important. If you follow, you will definitely realize. If you do not follow the principles, you will not realize. It is said that the master is the captain of the boat. If you remain seated, definitely he will bring you to the mainland. But if you jump out, it’s not the mistake of the master. "Satguru Nām Jahāj Chaḍe Sutri Par Jo Śraddhākar Śivde Guru Par Uttaran Har." Gurū Nānak said, and today is the auspicious day of the incarnation of Gurū Nānak. Today is the full moon, a very important full moon. And so Gurū Nānak said, "Satguru Nām Jahāj," the name of your Gurū Dev is a boat, or a ferry for you. "Chaḍe sutri par," those who will get in, they will cross the ocean of ignorance. "Śraddhā karo, sevā karo, Guru par uttaran har." If you will remain with confidence, definitely Gurudev will bring you to the mainland. So it is not just that you practice yoga. One day this, and one day that—this and that, nowhere. It’s called "no one’s wife." So, Yoga in Daily Life is authentic, and it has the blessing of our holiness. Now, to be a teacher is something great. But the teacher is that one who merges into the guru consciousness, who has no selfishness, no ego, and no personal interests. Only giving. Giving without conditions. There are no conditions. Then that teacher will be successful. That teacher means one who does not bind you or make you dependent, but makes you free. The aim is to become free, meaning liberation, but you will not become free unless you are able to swim. When you can swim, then you are free. If you can’t swim, we will not let you fall into the water. If you can’t fly, the mother bird will not let you fall out of the nest. But when your wings are strong and you can fly, the mother bird will not let you sit in the nest. And so, to be a teacher means a new birth, a new consciousness. When you teach others, it means you are teaching yourself. You will see how much wisdom you have and how much you have forgotten. So don’t think that you are teaching others, but you are teaching yourself. Always, we are the student. You will be the guru or the teacher at the last second of your life, the last half-second of your life, where you will have no time to think of anything. Anger, jealousy, hate—as long as you are living, you have this nature of things: anger, jealousy, hate, desires, greediness. Therefore, we are students; we are disciples. It is not easy to be a disciple, but it is most difficult to be a master. And so, to be a teacher of Yoga in Daily Life is a blessing. To be a teacher of Yoga in Daily Life means you are a fortunate one. It becomes your prime duty to hand over the wisdom of the master as originally as it is. Do not mix your thoughts inside. If you do, you will fail. It means neither you will be successful, nor will your students be successful. There are two kinds of worlds in which we are existing. One is the God-made world, and one is the man-made world. Man-made world is not perfect. God-made world is perfect. So the words of the wisdom of the master are the ultimate truth. But what you create out of your intellect, your emotion, they are not perfect. Therefore, all Yoga in Daily Life teachers should keep to the system and origin and keep to the guru-paramparā. Otherwise, you will be lost, and others will be lost, to understand what a Guru is. Those who cannot understand, we are sorry for them. So when people think that we practice yoga and we don’t need a Guru, this is the biggest mistake they can make in life. We are not only practitioners of āsanas and prāṇāyāms, and for this also you need a master. Nothing you can learn without a teacher. Any profession that you learn, you need a teacher. You can’t become a professor, you can’t become a doctor, you can’t become a surgeon without the teacher. You cannot become a driver without having a driving teacher. You can’t become an electrician without having a teacher. The entire system is based on the guru system. But still you do not accept. That means that is ignorance. Gurū Nānak said, "Sauso Caṅda Oogave, Suraj Caṅde Hazār, Itta Caṅdano Na Karsake, Guru Binā Hirde Ghor Andhkar." Hundreds of moons and the sun can rise, Gurū Nānak said. Hundreds of moons and suns can rise, still they cannot illuminate your heart. Only Gurudev can illuminate your heart. Without Gurudev, your heart remains in darkness. So, our Yoga in Daily Life is in the world a very special system. I analyze some television programs in India, even. Many, many so-called holy saints are talking, giving programs on television. Hundreds. I think in India we have 800 channels. There is no country in the world which has so many channels, or maybe more than that. We have 35 official languages and 3,045 dialects. Every dialect has some television channels. So many, many people are talking nowadays. But the great pity was this: none of them mentioned the name of their master. None of them saw. The picture of their master, they asked me also to speak on television. And you will see in our program, first is Devpurījī, then Mahāprabhujī, then Holy Gurujī. It is said, even if it is dirty water from the street, canalization water, when it enters into the Gaṅgā, it becomes holy water. No one said it is dirty water from the street. Only that water becomes holy water which enters into the Gaṅgā. Only that disciple becomes the master who enters into the master’s consciousness. And when some streams flow out of the Ganges and go to some other streets and roads, nobody will call it Gaṅgā water. So those who leave their master and say, "I am my teacher now," will lose the Guru principle. It doesn’t matter how old you are or how high a position you have. Maybe the president of the country or the general secretary of the United Nations. But for your mother, you are still her child. That’s reality. She will not call you "Your Excellency." She will tell you, "Naughty boy!" That’s mother’s right. So it doesn’t matter how highly you are developed. For your master, you are still a disciple. And it’s very nice to be a disciple. Because then the master has all responsibilities. On the day when you declare that you are the master, you don’t need a master, then the burden of the whole world will fall on your shoulders. So Yoga in Daily Life is that divine path. You should be loyal to it, and you should be grateful to it. And with thanks to Mahāprabhujī, Devpurījī, and Gurujī, Alakhpurījī. You know our Dr. Shanti, Sadhvī Shanti. She sends all of you many greetings from India. And she spent last summer in Badrināth. And she told people that she is a sanyāsī from the spiritual lineage of the Alakhpurījī. And people were so happy. Oh, the Alaknanda Purījī. There is a river that is called Alaknandā, a holy river. And that is after the name of Alakhpurījī, and there is Alaknanda mountain. So Alakhpurījī is a very, very old saint, thousands of years old. And our roots are from there. So when we go there, we shall have a bath in Alaknandā. One day we must go, okay? So keep your loyalty to the Yoga in Daily Life and follow the Guru Paramparā, follow the system. Don’t try to mix masala inside. Don’t try to create out of your psychology some different system and put in. This is for you, the Gurū Granth Sāhib. Nānakdājī said, "Guru Granth Ko Janiye, Pragat Guraan Ki Dehe, Jiske Hirde Saach Hai, Khoj Usi Mele." Believe that the literature of the Gurudev is the embodiment of himself, the Gurudev. Those who have purity and truth in their heart will get realization. That’s why it is said, "Mantra Mūlam Guruvākyam," this mantra. So there are many teachers who already have diplomas, and new teachers are coming. I bless them all, and I am very happy to see you today.
