The Path of Renunciation in Daily Life

The spiritual path of renunciation (Tyāga) is explained as the means to realize the highest truth while living a normal family and working life. "Enter the kingdom of the Lord through the gate of sacrifice." "Renounce and enjoy." The discourse clarifies that true renunciation is not abandoning worldly duties but sacrificing inner thieves like passion, anger, pride, greed, attachment, and ego. True enjoyment is found in inner contentment and divine love, not temporary worldly pleasures, illustrated by a story where basic physical relief is shown to be a more urgent joy than entertainment. Practical guidance is given to integrate spirituality into daily life by repeating God's name or mantra during work, cultivating devotion (Bhakti), and practicing selfless giving without expectation. The conclusion affirms that salvation is attainable for householders through sincere devotion and taking shelter at the holy feet of the Gurudev, whose grace is supreme.

Salutation to the cosmic light, Lord of our hearts, omniscient and omnipresent. In His divine presence, good evening, dear brothers and sisters, and good morning to the people on other continents. This blessing comes to you from the beautiful country, the Czech Republic, from Bhagavān Śrī Dīp Nārāyaṇ Mahāprabhujī’s āśram. At the same time, I wish you all the best. If you have a birthday, happy birthday. If you have a marriage day, a happy marriage day. And if you celebrate something different, I pray for a beautiful day. This evening, our topic is this: how to develop spirituality while living a normal or family life and working in offices. What should we renounce, and what need we not renounce? What is renunciation? That is very important to know for many people, especially in this century, in such a modern life, in this Kali Yuga. Is there hope for us to achieve the highest goal, which is spoken, described, and guided by the great saints of the world? Are these only empty words? Are these only fairy tales? Or is it reality? Yes, it is reality. It is reality, and those saints who attained self-realization, who attained God-realization, who saw God in different forms, those saints will not lie. If Jesus speaks about the Holy Father, or a Hindu saint speaks about Īśvara, Parameśvara, or Brahman, or a Muslim speaks of Allah, this is not a fairy tale; it is reality. And therefore, how to realize that highest truth in this world? Our beloved Holy Gurujī, His Holiness Śrī Svāmī Madhavānandajī of Rajasthan, India, said, "Enter the kingdom of the Lord through the gate of sacrifice." Now, Tyāga. Mahātmā Gandhījī said, "Renounce and enjoy." What does it mean to enjoy? Not this worldly life. All worldly enjoyment is temporary. These are the empty bubbles on the water. That enjoyment has less joy and more suffering than the enjoyment you think you will enjoy. But a great personality like Mahātmā Gandhījī said, "Enjoy." What is the best that you can enjoy? It is very hard to find out what you can enjoy. Think over what brings you the joy which you can call, "I enjoy that joy." That enjoyment we are searching for throughout our whole life. And that enjoyment is called contentment. Gaj dhan, bhaj dhan, aur ratan dhan khan, jab āye santosh dhan, sab dhan dhūl samān. Gaj dhan: you may have thousands of elephants as your property. Now, in Kali Yuga, we are not capable of keeping even one elephant. But there were rich people who could take care of thousands of elephants. Gajdhan, Bajdhan, and they had golden birds. They were the owners of mines of diamonds and precious stones. But they had no peace in their heart, and they had no joy from that. When contentment comes, the satisfaction, then that happiness, that joy is indescribable. Many are searching for joy. What is the best way to enjoy? There is one little story which you would laugh at, what I bring between, what kind of story. Or should I leave it? Should I tell it? Okay. There was an emperor we call Bahadur Shah, the Turk, who came to India, and they ruled India. They were known as Bahadur Shah. So, one of the Bahadsa’s secretaries, he was very clever, very wise, and very good, a best advisor. His name was Birbal, not in German Birbal, so then Birbal, not a beer. Birbal always used his viveka, and it was very, very sharp, just like a knife. And Bahasa sometimes didn’t like it. And many times, Bāhasā told him, "Go away from me. I will not see you anymore. You lost your position, go." He said, "Okay." He went away. And after a few days or months, Bahasā needed him so much, nobody could help him. Then he said, "Please come back many, many times." So the Bahāṛā asked the question to Birbal. "Birbal, what is the best that we can enjoy? I would like to enjoy something. What is the best?" Birbal said to go to the toilet. Oh, my God. Birbal became so angry. "Always you put such things in front of me. You insult me." You should have said something: dancing, and let the dance and music and drinking, or something—enjoying. Eat something good, play some games, go swimming, this and that, go to the toilet, go out. Birbal said, "Okay, sir, truth is truth. You want to enjoy, and that’s what I want to tell you: where do you enjoy?" Okay, after some time, again Bhatsa invited Birbal to work. After three years passed, one day, Birbal organized a beautiful evening with some dance and many, many other things. And before going to this program, they invited many other guests. Birbal offered the Bhatsa a little bite, meaning what you call a finger bite, you know, something to eat. They always like nice things, pakodas or this and that. And Birbal put in those pakodas, sonāmukhī. You know all the sonāmukhī. Yes? Say a little louder. That’s it. Now, they went. There was a beautiful hall, a very beautiful audience, and many VIPs sitting. Mahāprabhujīp Karatā Mahāprabhujīp Karatā Mahāprabhujīp Karatā Mahāprabhujīp Karatā. There is a chasm in the stomach. I must go. Virbal said, "That is not enjoying. This is enjoying." He said, "It doesn’t matter. I must go." He went and came back. Virbal said, "Why did you leave this enjoyment?" He said, "Now I agree. To go to the toilet is more enjoyable than this joy." So when we speak about enjoyment, what do we mean by enjoyment? Ayurveda says that the first enjoyment, the first happiness, is a healthy life. The second is that you have some kind of material means, so that you can welcome the guest and offer them something to eat and things. If you have nothing, you can’t do anything. Teejā Sukh Ghar Meṅ Ghai, the third happiness is that you have your own milk cow, your own milky cow, so that you have fresh and good milk. Chauta Sukh, a good neighbor, the good neighbor, it is a neighbor, but it is like your family member. Otherwise, many of you know how your neighbors are, upstairs or downstairs or to the side. You want to sleep, and they play loud music. You want to play with the high heels, ladies walking in the kitchen, tuck, tuck, midnight. So high heels must have rubber down, you know. Often we hear in the corridor, they go like this. No ahimsa. You should write on the door, "No high-heeled shoes, please." Fifth, happiness. This is strī ājñā kārī, your wife or your husband obedience, obedience partner, that your partner has mutual understanding towards you and is not quarreling every day. Many times the man comes home late from the office, and he makes overtime because he doesn’t want to come home and see who is waiting for him. So, ladies, when your husband is coming home late, then you should know who is guilty: he or you. And there are some who are longing, looking forward to come home, and someone is waiting with a warm heart. That’s it: obedience, or a partner who has a mutual understanding. And the next happiness is Āgyākārī Śāntān, the children who are also obedient, also follow you, understand you, and love you. Many of you have children, but you don’t have that happiness because children went to the Kuśaṅgā. In this Kali Yuga, it’s a big plus point if your children have good education, they love you, and you love them. So what is happiness? Mahātmā Gāndhījī said, "Renounce and enjoy." What can you enjoy? Enjoy your inner peace. If you have a lot of properties, money, and things, you cannot enjoy peace. Always, you think somebody will take away, this will happen, that will happen, this will happen. When you have nothing, you are happy. You walk through the street in a new city, you go as a tourist, and you know how you hold your bag because there is a passport, there is money, there is this. And if you have nothing, you walk finally, nicely. No one can, there is no pickpockets, one has a chance. That’s it. So, enjoy means the inner contentment. That is the biggest enjoyment, the biggest happiness in our life. And how to get this to renounce? Tyāga. Now, tyāga means not that you just throw away or that you say, "I don’t like it." No, no, no. You tyāga, you give also to others. That happiness which you will receive from thyself and from others to whom you give something, that is indescribable happiness. That is a joy. Giving is a joy. Giving without expectation, without waiting, thank you. If you give someone something, they take it and don’t even say thank you, then walk away. You say, "My God, what kind of person is this?" It means you are expecting, no expectation. Otherwise, that which you give becomes selfish. That is not a tyāga. And the person to whom you give money, food, clothing, anything, don’t demand anything from that person. Don’t judge what he or she will do with this. It is not your property anymore. You gave it. And therefore, giving is not easy. So while leading a normal life, while leading a household life, while working in the offices or business life, you should have inside detachment, not attachment. And it is said, if you give, you will get back more than you gave. But still, don’t expect like that. Okay, Swamiji said, "Give, and I will get double." So now you give something, and you get nothing back. You wait, tomorrow you have nothing. Day after tomorrow, you have nothing. Not in that way. Not in that way. It is something different, something different. So, while leading your spiritual life as a normal worker in the offices or anywhere, you can develop your spirituality, and you can get self-realization. Holy Gurujī used to say, "OK, you are very busy." You have a hundred things to do. A hundred things. You are very busy. When you have to do a hundred things, then take one more. One hundred and one. That one has not very big meaning. And that is your mantra, your repetition, and your meditation. If you say that you don’t have the time, Gurujī said often, an alcoholic person, no matter how busy he or she is, will find time to drink alcohol. A smoker, no matter how busy, will find time to smoke. Who drinks coffee at a particular hour of the day? It doesn’t matter how busy you are, you will drink your coffee. So we are addicted to many things. Let’s have one addiction more, and that is God’s name. Therefore, it is said, Gurujī’s beautiful bhajan. Abham mast hua Rām rasī ke, Rām rasī ke. Moy lāge duniyā kā sabhī rasī ke. Now I am divine, like intoxicated, while drinking the nectar of God’s name. Abham mast hua Ram ras pike, Ram ras pike. Ras means the juice, the sap, the juice of the fruit. And that is the name of God’s name. "Moya Lage Duniya Ke Sabhe Rasvike." Compared with that juice of the God’s name, the nectar of the God’s name, all other juices of this world are tasteless. That’s it. Only that one knows who tasted that divine nectar. Lucky are they, blessed are they, fortunate ones are they, and it is they who will get the realization, or the God-realization, who tasted that nectar of God’s name. So, it doesn’t matter how busy you are. Nowadays, special technology has come that’s called the computer. And many, many, many people are working in the office, at home, in the airplane. In the train, in the bus, with the computers. But while working with the computer, let it go, what we call the Ajapa Mantra. Repeat your mantra. And I can tell you, your computer work will become easier. And if there is a complication, you will say, "Deep Niranjan, Sabduk Banjan," and suddenly everything is there. Yes, try. My computer didn’t function, and I said, "My God, it was very important things to find out," and, you know, I don’t know what to press. I don’t know which computer point I should press. I belong to this generation which is three centuries behind. So I said, "Deep Niranjan, Sabduk Banjan," and I just touched something and it appeared. I said, "Thank you, Mahāprabhujī." Gurudev, Gurudev sab kus kartā hai. Therefore, Holy Gurujī said, don’t worry. Sab ko sadā. Deep Nārāyaṇ Bhagavān Kī Deveśvara Mahādeva Mādhava Kṛṣṇa Bhagavān Savakūśā Devī Dātā Dīpa Dayāla. Everything can give us merciful Mahāprabhū Dīpa, the giver of everything. Therefore, though you are working in any field of your life, repeat your mantra, your Guru Mantra or Dīp Nirañjan Śabdak Bhañjan. You will see that all your problems are solved automatically, as our beloved Śivāvatāra Devpurījī said, "God takes upon himself the destiny of the devotee." Devotion. When your heart is full of love, then God takes over everything. But as I told you yesterday, when your heart is empty, is vacant, your heart is vacant so that anyone can enter in, then all your buddhi, your buddhi will become pure. Your buddhi is polluted and destroyed. Beautiful work which you did, many, many years and months on your spiritual life, spirituality, on your body, on your mind, on your consciousness, on your soul, you lost it, you lost it, just a little thing, and why? Because your heart was without love for Gurudev, without the presence of His divine name, and that is why you are suffering. So, tyāga, renunciation. Tyāga, kāma, krodha, mada, lobha, moha, and ahaṅkāra. If you think that you will renounce your family, your money, everything, and you go and sit in the mountains, have a small hut, grow your little vegetables, and sit there and meditate. That is not a tyāga. That means you run away. You run away, and you don’t know what is the responsibility of your dharma. That’s it. Tyāga means kāma, krodha, mada, lobha, moha, ahaṁkāra. First tyāga, the passion, krodha, the anger, mada, proudness, lobha, greediness, moha, attachment, and ahaṁkāra, ego. These are the five thieves, these are the five crocodiles. These are the five dangerous, poisonous snakes. They will kill your spirituality. Adopt another quality. Pull out this thorny bush. Pull out this poisonous cactus. And plant inside the Sanjīvanī Būṭī. Sanjeevanī means that herb which can wake again or call again back the dead body; it will come. And that Sanjeevanī is Bhakti. Lord, I don’t ask for anything, only one, Bhakti. Janam Janam Hari Dās Rakhī Jo, my Lord, every life let me be, or accept me, your servant. Who is a lucky one that can serve devotion, bhakti? Bhakti, vairāgya, detachment, enduring everything. You see things as only the means of life, that’s all, but not the source of life. Bhakti, Vairāgya, Jñāna, Viveka, Śraddhā, Dayā, Sat Sampatti, good qualities, and this you can have though you are working in your office or in your field, or you are a taxi driver or a bus driver or a householder, or whatever you are doing. Hātme kām or mukme Rām. In the hands there is work, and in the mouth you have the name of God. If you are a musician, you are the luckiest one. You play for your beloved, for your Lord, God. And when you offer your devotion, when you are playing for Him and it is He who is playing in you, you will be the best musician. You should have devotion to your profession. And if you are a singer, you are the more beautiful and luckiest one. I sing for thee, O my Lord. My voice, my tongue, my vocal cords are worthy enough, Lord, that I can sing your glory. Bhajans. That’s it. There are many, many forms to sing the glory of your Lord. And there are many, many forms to criticize your Lord negatively. But God is a merciful one, you know. Once, Kṛṣṇa said, "From Gokul, I am going to Mathurā to meet Kaṁsa." They said, "Lord, you are a God, and you are going to Kaṁsa. He will kill you. Kaṁsa is a devil." Kṛṣṇa said, "I must go. Why? Because he thinks of me so much. Day and night, he can’t sleep. 'Kṛṣṇa! Kṛṣṇa!...'" So it doesn’t matter if you think of me as angry or friendly; he thinks of me. So, you know, when you are jealous of someone, you are more aware of that person. When you criticize someone and you are angry with someone, that is in you existing, that one. So then, why not be friendly? It will be more beautiful, more joyful. So, jis hālame, jis cālame raho, Rām kaho, Rām kaho. In which condition and in which situation you are, just repeat the name of God. God will protect us. So, Rāmrāś, there are three kinds of Rāśa. Amras, Chamras, and Ramras. "Am" means the mango, so it means the juice of the vegetation: any fruits, any roots, any leaves. That’s called Amras. Chamras, physical love: the skin, the eating. And Ramras is the name of God. So these are two different kinds of juices. God will not give you immortality, but the Rāmrās, the name of God, that will give you immortality. We trust, we believe. It is holy for us. This planet is holy. And if the planet is holy, everything which is created from this planet is holy. God is divine, and the divine created is divine. A baby of the tiger is a tiger, and a baby of the snake is a snake, and a baby of the pig is a pig. Similarly, we are children of God, so we are God. And that God is within us, and we are that one, the Ātmā. The soul is individual, and Ātmā is universal, God itself. That only the human can realize while following the disciplines, Guru Vakya, then everything is given to you. So don’t let your heart be vacant. As soon as your heart is vacant, you will fall into troubles. Troubles, that is. So there is no bal. Bal means strength; you have no more strength. Entra, it means the three, all: Ādhibhautik, Ādhidaivik, and Ādhyātmik. All these three tapas will catch you, and you will be tortured in the fire of the three tapas. So, while living a normal life, enjoying your family life and doing your dharma, your professions, you can be spiritual, and you can attain your salvation, no doubt at all, and you will come there. Therefore, Mahāprabhujī is the one who can protect us and who can lead us. And therefore, Gurujī said, Satguru Jai Sādhī. Therefore, though you lead a different life, you can achieve your highest goal in life if you take shelter at the holy feet of the Gurudev. It is the Gurudev who can protect us. Brahma, Viṣṇu, Maheś, Guru Koḍhyāve, even the Brahma, the creator; Viṣṇu, the sustainer, the protector. And Maheśa, the Śiva, the liberator, even they are surrendered to the Gurudev. Rarely, all avatars have not attained it. All incarnations, divine incarnations, they also repeat and meditate on the Gurudev. Still, they couldn’t reach that infinity, and any border of the power of the Gurudev, which is beyond all limitations.
