Raksha Bandhan Festival
Raksha Bandhan or Rakhi Purnima
is a festival which celebrates the
relationship between brothers and
sisters. The central ceremony
involves the tying of a rakhi
(sacred thread) by a sister on her
brother's wrist. This symbolizes
the sister's love and prayers for
her brother's well-being, and the
brother's lifelong vow to protect
her. Bandhan means: to tight.
We are bounded to our commitment,
our vow. We are also tight
emotionally, physically, mentally,
culturally, religiously and in many
other ways. But to be tight with
something means not to be against
others. It is a symbol of great love
and protection.
