Levels of consciousness

A spiritual discourse explaining the five levels of human consciousness.

"Destiny is caused individually. Do not blame anyone for your destiny; why something happened to you or to others is destiny."

"The mind is like a river. You cannot block a river. If you block it, the dam will break and wash all the land away. But we can give direction to the river."

An unnamed speaker provides a detailed map of the five levels: unconsciousness, subconsciousness, consciousness, superconsciousness, and cosmic consciousness. He explains how karma resides in the unconscious, manifesting as destiny, and how impressions from the senses are stored in the subconscious, emerging as desires or psychic issues. The talk covers the dangers of improperly trying to control the mind, advocating instead for giving it direction through practices like personal mantras, and emphasizes purification of the lower levels to eventually attain superconsciousness.

We have five levels of consciousness: unconsciousness, subconsciousness, consciousness, superconsciousness, and cosmic consciousness. At present, we are pendulating through the three levels of consciousness. The unconscious is the level of consciousness we call deep sleep, or something which is forgotten; we do not know anything about it. That is the dormant part of our consciousness. In this dormant part exist all our past deeds, which we call karma, or what you may call your good luck or bad luck, sin or good things. Everything is dormant there, and we have no way to that unconscious door. These impressions will come out occasionally as destiny. Destiny is caused individually. Do not blame anyone for your destiny; why something happened to you or to others is destiny. Actions, the karma, are in your hands; you have a decision, like a stone you hold. It is under your decision. If you want to keep it, you can keep it; if you want to throw it, you can throw it. But once the stone is thrown, it is no longer in your decision. That is not in your hands; it is gone. You have done your deeds; they are gone. So you had the freedom to act, but now you have no decision over how it will react or what it will cause. You have the freedom to act, to do. When you did something, or are doing something, then you must be ready to surrender to the reactions which will come back. There is no way to escape. Good things will return as good things, and bad things will return as bad things. Therefore, we should not blame God. We should not blame any friends or colleagues. There is no one to blame but oneself. Thus, all our actions lie dormant in the unconscious. Through certain techniques of meditation, some kriyās of yoga, through prayers and mantras, we can purify our unconscious level. We can purify it slowly, step by step, by doing good things. The unconscious is like a dark room. We can go in with a torchlight to see each object, or we need the mercy of God, what we call the blessing. A blessing is like a big light; you switch it on and everything becomes visible. It is God who can forgive. It is God who can remove our sins. It is the divine blessing of the enlightened souls, the enlightened masters. Their blessing can remove this. Otherwise, we will carry all these destinies throughout this life and into the next lives. Destiny is carried in a bag, like a rucksack, by your astral being. You cannot run away from it, just as you cannot run away from the shadow of your body. Subconsciousness is the second level. Subconsciousness is that part of our consciousness which begins from our life in the embryo until now, the past, even one minute ago. All kinds of impressions and experiences, whatever we have, are stored in the subconsciousness. We have five senses to bring information to the subconsciousness: through vision, through smell, through sound, through taste, and through touch. These are the five senses through which we receive information from the external world. There is no sixth one. Those impressions which went to the subconsciousness, we forget after a while. Though we forget them, they are there, and they come out from time to time as desires. Vices and unfulfilled desires go back to the subconsciousness; they will come out stronger, and when you cannot fulfill them or solve them, they become psychic problems: anxiety, restlessness, sleeplessness, fear, and even what you call hallucinations and phobias, which can lead to schizophrenia. Therefore, you should know what is in your subconscious. Subconsciousness has to be cleaned through healthy education, through the healthy guidance of parents and friends, to gain clarity in life. The conscious mind, the conscious state, is our state of being awake. We are alert; we see, we hear, we are awakened. So whatever is happening in our surroundings is received by our consciousness, and immediately the consciousness hands it over to the subconscious. Everything is recorded there. When you find a peaceful time, such as when you are sleeping or concentrating, when you are withdrawing from the external world, the subconscious again puts out those impressions you had before. Now, the function between the consciousness and the subconsciousness—the power or help through which impressions go to the subconsciousness and through which they come out—that function is known as the mind. So if you try to control the mind, then the subconsciousness can become very dangerous. This is where people make mistakes. Without knowing, they begin to meditate. They want to control the mind. They want to awaken some energy centers. And that can have a negative effect. Therefore, yoga practices or all esoteric practices should be done under experienced masters. The mind is like a river. You cannot block a river. If you block it, the dam will break and wash all the land away. But we can give direction to the river. So we should not stop the mind, but we shall give some direction to the mind. For that reason, you have to use personal mantras. That is your personal way. Then you can clean your subconsciousness. You can clean your unconscious level. In order to clean the subconscious and unconscious, you have to become very clear in your conscience, acting and doing everything very consciously, or as some say, wisely. "Wisely done" means you did everything very alert and conscious, without overthinking. Superconsciousness comes when your three levels of consciousness are cleaned. That we call holy consciousness, spiritual consciousness, divine consciousness. When that level of consciousness is developed, then at the end of life, this individual consciousness will merge into the cosmic consciousness; that is what is called cosmic consciousness.
