Meditation, part 1 (introduction)

A practical guide to meditation posture and the significance of chanting Oṃ.

"Meditation should be done while sitting on the floor with a blanket and one pillow under your buttocks. What is very, very important is that you should feel physically comfortable."

"Oṃ is the origin sound of the universe. Everything is created out of the sound. Everything is existing in the sound. Everything will dissolve in the sound."

An instructor provides foundational guidance for meditation, emphasizing physical comfort and stillness in one's seated posture. He then explains the profound journey of the Oṃ sound through the body's energetic and nervous systems, from its origin at the navel to its ascent to the crown of the head and its descent to the heart, describing it as a form of Kriyā Yoga that releases stress and creates peace.

Meditation should be done while sitting on the floor with a blanket and one pillow under your buttocks. If you cannot sit on the floor, then of course you can sit on the sofa, like I am sitting, or you can sit on a chair. But generally, it is in this position. What is very, very important is that you should feel physically comfortable. So it does not matter how you sit, but you should feel comfortable. The liberation one gets is through knowledge and through devotion, not through the postures. Yet it is very important that our body is comfortable and motionless. Here is an example: this glass is our body, and the liquid, for example, is our mind. If the glass is unbalanced and moving, then the liquid is also moving. If the glass is comfortable, relaxed, and motionless, then the liquid will also become motionless. Therefore, please, make yourself comfortable. It is best if you take off your shoes; you will feel the energy on your foot soles. You may also put your shoes to the other side. Place your hands on the thighs or on the lap, either with palms facing upward or resting at your side. During the meditation, your eyes should be closed. Whatever you wish to see in this hall, please do it quickly, and then close your eyes. Do not open them again until the practice is over. We will all chant Oṃ three times. Oṃ is the origin sound of the universe. Everything is created out of the sound. Everything is existing in the sound. Everything will dissolve in the sound. The seat of the sound is the navel. During the chanting of Oṃ, the sound ascends from the navel to the top of the head. From the navel, the resonance of Oṃ ascends through the vegetative nerve system, which in yoga we call suṣumnā. And from the beginning of the brain, or the small of the brain, there are two very important nāḍīs, you may say nerves, which are called the sympathetic and parasympathetic nerves. Through these both channels, the resonance ascends towards the hemispheres. It releases the stress. You may experience a lightning-like sensation, and the sound from both hemispheres comes to one point that is called the door of liberation, brahmarandhra, very on the top of the head. You see a young child born, you will see a soft part on the top of the head. That is called the door of liberation. One part of the sound is going into the space. And the second part of the sound, through the piṅgalā nāḍī, enters into the heart center, which creates peace and clarity. This is a kind of Kriyā Yoga. So when we chant Oṃ, observe these points or the paths of the sounds: the navel, through the suṣumnā nāḍī, through the spinal column, up to the beginning of the skull, through the two nāḍīs, dividing or resonating, spreading to both hemispheres. Like lightning, and collected at the point on the sahasrāra cakra—the door of liberation—and from there, half of the sound is resonating into the space and half enters into the heart. Half of the sound from that point goes into space, and half into the heart center. The navel, central nervous system through the spine. Sympathetic, parasympathetic channels, both hemispheres, door of liberation, endless universe, uniting your heart with that deep inhale and exhale. Recording location: Slovenia, Ljubljana, Seminar
