No one can change destiny but the Guru (from Ramayan)

A spiritual discourse on destiny, karma, and the limits of personal power, illustrated through the story of Rāvaṇa.

"Our karmic records are written. By the Vidātā; when you are born, then the Vidātā is writing everything: what you will get in this life, what will happen to you."

"I can change everything, but not my fate, not my destiny."

The speaker narrates the concept of lekhā (karmic records) written by Vidātā (destiny), which cannot be altered. He illustrates this through an extended parable where the mighty, egoistic Rāvaṇa attempts to defy a destiny written for his daughter. Despite Rāvaṇa's immense power and his attempt to kill the prophesied, disabled child, destiny ensures the child survives, is adopted by a king, and ultimately marries Rāvaṇa's daughter. The conclusion emphasizes that only by following a Guru's guidance can one navigate the unchangeable script of karma.

Lekha means records—your karmic records. Our karmic records are written. By the Vidātā; when you are born, then the Vidātā is writing everything: what you will get in this life, what will happen to you. No one can delete the writing of the Vidātā. The Vidātā comes at the time of birth. If you are born even in a beggar's family, and if the Vidātā writes that you will become a king, in five years, he will be. But you cannot influence the Vidātā. There is one story. You know, there was a mighty king of Śrī Laṅkā, Rāvaṇa. He was a very learned one, very wise, but he had two weaknesses: ego and desires, passion. That developed in him the qualities of the devils. Otherwise, Rāvaṇa was a great learned person. He had many, many siddhis. At that time, Rāvaṇa offered his own head ten times to Brahmā. He took the sword in his hand, and he cut his head and gave it to Brahmā; a new head grew. Ten times. Then Brahmā gave him the nectar of immortality. In his navel, the Maṇipūra Chakra, his death would be only when somebody hit his Maṇipūra Chakra with an arrow. Otherwise, any limb of his body you cut, it would immediately grow anew. So, Rāvaṇa is known as Daśaśīrṣa, ten-headed Rāvaṇa. He had so much physical strength that he could hold ten elephants at once; the ten elephants were not able to move. For us, it's even very hard to keep our dog when we are going walking. And all the nine planets—Rāvaṇa said, "I will just kiss you into powder, always stay in my favor." So, all the nine planets were standing like his bodyguards. What about others? That was the glory of Rāvaṇa. When he heard about Rāma, Rāvaṇa was laughing, smiling. "These kids, are they cleaners? Running in the forest without shoes and so on? In front of me, they are not like mosquitoes." That was Rāvaṇa's ego. One day, Rāvaṇa was sitting in his palace in the evening, about 8:30, 9 o'clock. Some lady was going in his palace. No one could see her because she is in astral form, but Rāvaṇa could see—siddhi. He said, "Stop, stop. Who are you, going in my palace without my permission? I will just burn you." She said, "Sir, sir, Your Highness, I am Vidātā. I am Vidātā, destiny." "What the hell are you doing here? Where are you going?" She said, "Just now, in a few minutes, seconds, you will get the birth of a daughter, and I have to write her future." He said, "Oh, write good. And before leaving the palace, tell me what you wrote. Otherwise, in the entire Kṛpāvan, you can't hide anywhere; I will just kill you like a mosquito. Brahmā, Viṣṇu, Śiva, no one has the power to protect you. Ni Brahmā, ni Viṣṇu, ni Śiva ti ne mogu pomoći." (Not Brahmā, not Viṣṇu, not Śiva can help you.) Three Bhuvana means all the three worlds. So far his ego was. She says, "Yes, sir, before going I will tell you. But one thing I cannot promise you, but that, I can give you permission. When I am writing, it is not I who is writing; it is karma, the destiny of that newly born soul. According to that, my pencil will move. I cannot influence my pencil, like a best artist painter, he cannot influence his pencil; he has the intuition, and he is just writing or painting." "Anyhow, go, and when you go back, tell me what did you write. Otherwise, I will paralyze all of you. Otherwise, I will paralyze all the creatures." She said, "How will that happen, sir? I will cut off your hands." No more pencil will move. Destiny was. The Vidātā was thinking, she was thinking. "Oh God, what is written in my destiny? Why did you send me here? God, what is written in my destiny? Why do I have to be here? Perhaps today was my bad day." Well, she went. It took her a few seconds, minutes. And that's called lekhā. Lekhā means writing; lekhā means article writing. And lekhā means your destiny. So she wrote everything and she put it in her back bag—the back bag of a newly born child. Everyone you have on your back bag, you cannot open; it's difficult to know. You can try; it's impossible. Anyhow, she came back. Rāvaṇa was sitting. "What did you write?" "Sir, everything is most beautiful, very nice. Being your daughter: the beauty of the entire universe, the best qualities, the most luckiest person to be your daughter-in-law." Rāvaṇa said, "Yes, that I know everything." "Yes, sir, but what is that? What is the 'but'?" "But is it that she will have one husband, which will have some physical defect?" "How? What kind of defect? First, his both eyes will not coordinate; they will go like this. Second, his legs will be like an X leg. And third, his back will have more waves. And out of both eyes, only one will be visible; the other will be blind. So when he wants to see you, sir, he had to look far back side. He has to turn around here. I see." "Aha. I see. And where will he be born?" "He is already born." "Yes, sir. And that child will be the child of a sweeper." "My daughter? Marrying a sweeper? Tell me, where is he?" She had to tell. "Now you go. You will remember your whole life that Rāvaṇa can change even your return." She said, "Thank you, sir." She went out. "Thank you, ma'am, for everything. Thank you." Well, Rāvaṇa ordered his soldiers to find that child, and cut him into many, many pieces, and throw him in the ocean for the fish. No bamboo, no flute, no noise. So they went to the sweeper's house, nine o'clock, ten o'clock at night, and they took the child away. Who can fight against the dictators? But the soldiers who took the child, they felt very great pain in their heart. They had compassion. Such a few days old boy, child, nice boy. Doesn't matter, his body is crippled, but not his soul. His body is a little crippled, but not his soul. The riverbed has its curves, but not the water. The riverbed has its curves, but not the water. But what to do? So they made a wooden box. A nice wooden box, and inside, nice pillows, a bed. And hung the milk bottle in such a way that the child can't take the mouth away, drinks all the way. And two o'clock in the night, they went far into the ocean with the boat and threw the wooden box inside and said, "Now your karma should know." They came back to Rāvaṇa. And Rāvaṇa said, "Finished." "Rāvaṇa, did you finish?" "Yes. We were going with the boat, drawing very far, about 100-200 km deep, so that not even one piece can come back. We went 100-200 km deep into the ocean and not a single piece can come back. He was thrown into the ocean a hundred kilometers away from the shore, and not a single piece can reach the shore ... completely finished him from this island. Not even our fish will have him in their stomach." Rāvaṇa said, "From now on, you get promotion, high position." One of them said, "Yes, sir, because we did a good karma." "Yes, in my favor." So, yes, sir, that's why you are happy, and time will show you. And some king and queen, they had a nice big boat, and they were going sailing in the ocean. And they saw some boxes swimming, coming, plodding. The king said, "Oh, I see there is some beautiful wooden box, far away," looking with the binoculars. And they had no children. They had no successor. And they were rolling the board that side, in that direction. They took the box, opened it, and there was a beautiful baby inside, crying; she was already hungry. And the queen was so happy, she took him to her chest and adopted him as their own child. That is the story of Gurudeva Yamarāja Sudāve, you know. That's standing; I told you one day, a child of a beggar can become a king. I told them that a child from Koldus was going to become a king. They were beautiful, they went home, they announced, they celebrated, and now he became a prince. They were happy, they went home, they celebrated, and he became a prince. He was growing day by day, and the girl was growing also day by day. Now the girl was about 25 years old—22 years, 25 years. And Rāvaṇa said, "Now it's time to look for a husband for my daughter. Now it's time to find the best husband for my daughter." He sent the Brahmins, the Paṇḍits, to search. Whatever they brought, Rāvaṇa didn't like. They were tired of it. So one day they found that boy, because Rāvaṇa said there should be some king who is richer than him. They were so desperate, they were so angry with him. They told Rāvaṇa, "We found the most beautiful prince." He said, "Rāvaṇa, I want to see him." He said, "We told him that we want to see." But the prince said, "I am not a demonstrating article. If Rāvaṇa doesn't give his daughter, I reject; I don't like it." Oh, it seems something. "And how is his father and kingdom?" "Of course, sir, you are the best in the whole universe. Of course, sir, you are the greatest in the whole universe. No one can be better than you. Yes, yes, yes. Therefore, we did our best. Okay, engagement. Announce the wedding. The best constellation, all are here. Jupiter, very good. Everything is best. You decide, and we will do our best to win your approval. You decide, and we will do our best to win your approval." So they arranged the marriage. So they arranged the marriage, and the party came. And the bride came. What do you call the bride? The groom, and they gave a beautiful house for them to stay. One hour before the marriage, they gave Rāvaṇa so much alcohol that he was seeing everything double; they put something inside. So when he saw the boy, Rāvaṇa had to look three, four times like this. They said, "Don't worry, sir, he's perfect, okay. Much better than you see." He said, "Go ahead, marry him." So there was a wedding ceremony—an eight-hour ceremony. And the next day at 10 o'clock in the morning, Rāvaṇa was sitting on his chair, laughing and smiling. That was also one of his weaknesses; it was one of his weaknesses; his ego was laughing. He said, "Destiny, Vidātā, come here." Then he said, "Vidātā, come here." And he came, "Yes, sir." And he came and said, "Yes, sir. What is with your writing? I, Rāvaṇa, have changed even your writing. I told you." She said, "Excuse me, sir. Did you check?" "What do you mean, check?" "I saw personally; he was beautiful. Did you see his face? Whenever I looked at him, he was looking like this, and I didn't force him to look at me. They introduced me, and he turned and said, 'Sir, yesterday you were drunk, and there was some juice of some herbs that created in you the effect of hallucination. But peacefully go and look now. Or let him come here.'" He said, "Now he's my son-in-law. I can't order him to come. It's the first day; I must respect him. I go to see." And then the boy was sitting there. When he saw that his father-in-law was coming, he stood up and said, "Let's begin from the pose." See how the legs are going, and now see the construction of the back. Look at the face; he is looking at you, but the head is on the back side. That is your son-in-law. How is it possible? It is possible; everything is possible. And then they asked the king, "When did he give birth to the child?" "We didn't give birth to the child; we found him." Then he said, "My God! Kill him! Kill him!" His daughter said, "Father, no, no, ... then I will be widowed. You can't do this sin." He said, "Yes, I accept it. I can change everything. I can change everything, but not my fate, not my destiny." So destiny is such that no one can change it except Gurudeva. If you follow the advice of the wise, then you may avoid your problems. And therefore, Guru Vākya is very important. This is why Guru Vākya is very important. Abbe, Abbe, ... Jarl, Guru, Abbe. Be allowed, be allowed, be allowed to be allowed by your Guru. Recording location: Hungary, Vep, Summer seminar
