Five chakras

An instructional talk explaining the nature and function of chakras and the importance of mantra.

"A chakra is an energy center; it is like a dynamo. When the dynamo moves, it produces energy."

"In the West, people make a big mistake; they disregard mantras, immediately categorizing them as religious. This is their own ignorance, their own complexes, which put them into trouble."

The speaker uses analogies of a generator and a compact disc to describe chakras as spinning energy centers that influence the physical body. He outlines different systems of chakras in the body, from the sole of the foot to above the neck, and emphasizes the importance of the five primary chakras from Mūlādhāra to Viśuddhi. A key theme is the need to purify these centers through mantra, critiquing a Western intellectual approach that rejects mantra as religious, and arguing that such cultural distinctions hinder spiritual awakening and lead to uncontrolled energy.

A chakra is an energy center; it is like a dynamo. When the dynamo moves, it produces energy. If the dynamo is not moving, then energy is not produced. Consider a small piece of metal with wires inside, like copper. If you touch it, it is just a cold piece of metal. But when it begins to turn, this movement produces energy. With that energy, you can run ventilation, air conditioning, lights, and computers. You can run it for 24 hours, but after you turn it off, there is no energy output. The generator still weighs the same; it didn't lose any mass. The energy is still there, but because it is not turning, it is not producing. This means the energy produced by our chakras is not physical energy, yet it does influence our physical being. It helps our eyes, our ears, our brain, and the entire movement of the body. A chakra is like a disc—like a compact disc (CD). Each chakra always has two parts, and they turn dynamically. One part turns in one direction, the other in the opposite direction. When their movement interacts, energy is awakened. These chakras exist throughout the entire body. There are many, many energy centers. At the sole of the foot is the earth chakra. From the ankle joint to the heel is the vegetation chakra. From the knee to the hip joints is the animal chakra. From the hip joints to the neck are the human chakras, and above this is the divine chakra. These are further divided into five parts, corresponding to the five elements and the five kośas (the five bodies). At every level, qualities from the previous chakras remain. When energy moves from the earth chakra to the vegetative chakras, an earth quality is still present. When moving from the vegetative to the animal chakra, a vegetative quality remains. When animal chakras merge into the human chakra level at the border, we have human qualities mixed with animal qualities. This is why we sometimes say a human is behaving like an animal. For us at present, five chakras are very important: from Mūlādhāra to Viśuddhi. These five chakras represent the five elements: earth, water, fire, air, and ether. The development and awakening of these chakras can confuse us if too much animal energy awakens. Then your energy, and your body, mind, and emotions, are not under your control. This is because animal energy is stronger than human energy. Animal energy combined with human consciousness becomes unbearable. Why does this happen? It happens because the chakras are not properly purified through mantra. In the West, people make a big mistake; they disregard mantras, immediately categorizing them as religious. This is their own ignorance, their own complexes, which put them into trouble. You will see that Kuṇḍalinī awakening, where it happens with some Indians, is very easy and very divine because that person accepts everything as it is. The Western brain is trained only intellectually, and where there is intellect, there is less chance of compromise. It is like talking to a computer. If you ask a computer, "Please, can you compromise?" it says there is no compromise. You say, "But please be kind," but there are no emotional feelings. The computer says there is no love, no compromise, no emotion, and no tolerance; it is straightforward. It will ask for your keyword. "Please, computer, forgive me, I forgot my key." It will not give it. But if you ask a human or a master, "Please, master, forgive me, I made a mistake, I forgot my mantra, please give me the mantra," we will do it. So, a dry intellect is causing human roots to rot. The warm feeling of love, respect, and adoration is being lost because the heart is not engaged. Therefore, if you make a distinction, thinking, "This mantra is Hindi, Sanskrit, Indian, and Hindu; I am Christian, I don't want this," you misunderstand. Mantra is mantra. There is no Christian, Hindu, Jewish, or Muslim mantra; love is love. The expressions differ in language, but the energy is energy. The sun is the sun; electricity is electricity. The language you use does not change the reality. There is no difference between a ring and a necklace, for the reality of both is gold. Therefore, a spiritual person whose Kuṇḍalinī is awakening, or who wishes to awaken it, must purify these doubts. Then the awakening of Kuṇḍalinī means the awakening of wisdom, freedom, happiness, and certainty—there is no fear. Thus, we must purify these five chakras and understand their qualities.
