Accept the changes

A spiritual discourse on observing change and cultivating wisdom.

"Wise are they who just observe the changes. The changes are like the flowing of the water in the river."

"One bank of the river is called happiness, and the other bank of the river is called unhappiness. Our life is passing through these two banks."

The speaker explores the pervasive nature of change in the body, mind, and life. Using the metaphor of a flowing river, they advise observing all changes—physical, emotional, and social—without emotional attachment, explaining that wisdom lies in this detached observation and in accepting one's own ignorance. The talk concludes by reflecting on recent changes and their temporary nature.

There is constant change in our body. There is constant change in our mind and thoughts. There is constant change in our everyday life. Therefore, change is ever-present. Now, it depends on how you see the change. If the changes are temporary and in your favor, then you are happy. If the changes are temporary and not in your favor, you are unhappy. So it is said, "Manomātra jagatā"—the world appears in front of you according to how your mind is projecting it. Wise are they who accept their ignorance. They are the wise ones who know, "I know that I don't know." Wise are they who search for the solution within themselves. Ego is a form of ignorance also, and the ego is so big, the ignorance is so big, that it does not accept. But there is no question of accepting or not accepting. It will change, and you didn't think that it would change. That was your ignorance. Anything you begin will not remain in that form. And it cannot be like that. It can be very boring; it can be very hard. Therefore, accept the changes in any form: physical, emotional, mental, intellectual, social, familial, relational—many, many things. The wise are they who just observe the changes. The changes are like the flowing of the water in the river. You are sitting at the bank of the river, and different articles are flowing in the river, and you are just observing. Some flowers are flowing, the tree leaves are flowing, a piece of paper is flowing, and so on. You are not crying, "Oh God, why is this changing? Why is this changing?" So life is a river which is constantly flowing. It is said, water is good when it's flowing. If water remains stagnant, it will become dirty or smelly. That water will be spoiled. "Pāṇī to chaltā bhalā"—therefore it's good that water is flowing. "Pada gandela hoj, sādho to ramtā bhalā, dāg na lage koj." And also, the sands are good that they are traveling; they should not stay in one place. A také je dobré, když svědci cestují, neměli by zůstávat na jednom místě. So our life is also that river, and this river has two banks, and the banks have the curves; the water doesn't have the curves. So these curves are the curves of our destinations; the time comes and suddenly you change. So it is said, the river has the curves, not the water. One bank of the river is called happiness, and the other bank of the river is called unhappiness. Our life is passing through these two banks, happiness and unhappiness. That water cannot change; the water's nature is just to flow through. If there are rocks or muddy or thorny bushes, it doesn't matter—clean or dirty—water just flows through. And therefore, many changes we observed in the last four months, and many changes are waiting, and you will change also. You have changed a lot, but in a better way. And someone had not a good change. But that is only temporary. You will be happy for that, that it is changed. Recording location: Czech Republic, Strilky, Seminar
