Stories

A spiritual talk on the ancient pedagogical power of stories, poetry, and performance.

"The ancient way of teaching is through stories. The best thing which remains in your memory is that which is in the form of a story."

"Poetry is the best way to preserve your wisdom... what is written is perfect in every aspect, as poetry, as a language, everything."

The speaker explains how stories, theater, and poetry are the most effective vessels for transmitting and remembering wisdom, using personal anecdotes and analogies. He advises students to transform difficult subjects into narratives and emphasizes that a good story, like a well-spiced dish, requires a fitting explanation to impart its full meaning.

The ancient way of teaching is through stories. The best thing which remains in your memory is that which is in the form of a story. When you were very small, your grandmother told you some stories. Till now you remember, but what you learned in your school you have forgotten. For all our young students, this is a beautiful piece of advice for you. The subject which you can't remember, and you have a problem for the examination, then convert that subject into a story. Convert the subject into a story; if it is mathematics, then you give the name Mr. M so-and-so, Mrs. M so-and-so. And M and M were playing a game, and the aim of that game was to know who am I. Who I am, so Mr. and Mrs. were playing the game. There was only M to know who I am, and now you give them a position. Anyhow, through the stories, and for those stories to be more vivid in our memory, that story remains more in our brain than they designed. The second form of the story was playing theater. Actors acting to explain that story to you. Many times such actors in films play the story, and they are sad, and they are crying, and tears are coming. I'm surprised how quickly they get the tears. They are very happy, and suddenly tears are flowing. I spoke with one actor, "How do you manage that quickly tears come?" He said, "It's a very big secret." So I said, "Please, can you tell me?" She said, "They are cutting onions under my chair, or they put a little bit of what you call eucalyptus, Tiger Balm, you know." And when a little Tiger Balm comes here, you are like sad and growing. Then you let your muscles hang; actor acting. The second form of learning and preserving is poetry. Poetry is the best way to preserve your wisdom. And then the last is write-down; writing everyone can change, but the poetry, like the Bhagavad Gītā in Sanskrit, what is written is perfect in every aspect, as poetry, as a language, everything, grammar and so on. And that person who learns more stories, and after that story you have to give one explanation, then your story has a test; every eating is good eating, every vegetable is a good vegetable, but you have to add some spices, then it's tasteful, it is a tasteful vegetable, it's very fresh and good, but when you can give some spices, oh! That was a Czech vegetable, and you can find the difference between Indian kitchen and Czech kitchen. I will close my eyes, and I will close my nose. One spoon Czech and one spoon Indian; I can tell you which is Indian food. Different, but there is Indian potatoes and Czech potatoes. Potato is potato, so every story must have some explanation. And you should know when and where to hang this story, so this is your wisdom. Story means stored; the wisdom is stored in the form of a tale, and that tale means a long tail, you know, and as long a tail as you have, that much wisdom you have.
