The Difficulty of Construction and the Devilish Power of Destruction

A spiritual discourse on the destructive ease of worldly life and the demanding path to eternal joy.

"Anyone can destroy. But to build up and to protect, you cannot—no matter what it is."

"Worldly joy is temporary, and we are searching for everlasting joy, sustainable joy. That is in self-realization."

The speaker contrasts the devilish power of destruction with the difficulty of sustaining anything of value, from relationships to spiritual practice. He explains that true, everlasting happiness is found only in self-realization and union with Brahman, which requires overcoming worldly attachments and adopting a complete way of life, not a part-time practice. He references bhajans by Mahāprabhujī and Holy Gurujī about attaining vairāgya (dispassion) and liberation.

Anyone can destroy. But to build up and to protect, you cannot—no matter what it is. It could be your friendship, your relations, your family, your business, your company, and so on. Everything is hard to build up and hard to maintain. But to destroy is a devilish power. That, one can do. You are angry, you are offended, you are suffering. You think you have lost something, and this makes you take such steps in your life for which you will be sorry forever. And it will be a destruction. It could be your health; it could be your spiritual sādhanā—something sustainable, long-lasting, everlasting. Worldly joy is temporary, and we are searching for everlasting joy, sustainable joy. That is in self-realization. That is in the cosmic love. That is universal love; that is something indescribable. Therefore, in one bhajan, Mahāprabhujī said—in one of the bhajans, Mahāprabhujī says: "Gurūvar, I want to go with you to that country." To give up all this bondage of the world, and "what people will say," what people are talking. All this, where you are hesitating about culture, religion, traditions—you have to overcome. This hesitation you have to overcome in yourself. Let me dress in the dress of the vairāgya. And vairāgya is the one who detests everything. So in a bhajan, Holy Gurujī said: "The pure vairāgya is that, from the earth till the Brahmaloka, all kinds of joy for you should be like dirt." Because real joy is to be one in Brahman; the true happiness is to be one with Brahman. Only then your logme janamena maraṇa—then there is no birth and no death. Brahmanandamesh, an everlasting joy, so much happiness. For which we are longing, so it is not a theory, it is a practice. But it is not that practice that you can do morning and evening, one hour, and finished. Of course, it is not an exercise that you can do in the morning or in the evening. It is an entire way of life. And that makes man into the God-man. Otherwise, there is narrow thinking, and this makes a man into the devil-man.
