Yoga is the science of body, mind, spirit, and soul. Every practice has a purpose. Begin by relaxing in Ānandāsana with palms up to open the chest and lower the shoulders. Legs apart relaxes the pelvis. Abdominal breathing massages organs and calms emotions. Practice always within comfort, never forcing. Pavanamuktāsana stretches the spine and stimulates digestion. Marjari Āsana mobilizes the spine; let movement guide breath into harmony. Paścimottānāsana stretches from the perineum upward, affecting the Maṇipūra Cakra. Prasārita Pādottānāsana works the inner legs and digestion. Jānu Śīrṣāsana brings the body into balance through equal practice on both sides. Mṛgāsana strengthens the knees and calms the nervous system. After postures, rest in Ānandāsana to feel the effects on circulation, breath, and consciousness.

How a hatha yogi can reach the aim of yoga

Yoga is the singular union of the individual soul with the Supreme. It is Ādi Anādi, beginningless and endless. The eternal space contains consciousness, called cetan. Yoga is the harmonizing, balancing, and uniting of these principles into oneness. This union is between Jīvātmā, the individual soul, and Paramātmā, the Supreme Soul. The purpose of all yoga paths is to achieve this. Haṭha Yoga requires strict discipline, Kāyā Sādhana, to balance the body and mind. A true Haṭha Yogī forges their own path like a lion, not following the common road. They require purification, as energy transfers between people like an infection, disrupting meditation and clarity. The yogī must protect their energy and not change their determined course, even against opposing winds. Achieving this balance leads to liberation.

Spirituality transcends gender; the soul is identical in all beings. The mother is revered as the first divine principle, representing space, while the father represents consciousness. Yoga is the science of uniting awareness with consciousness, balancing the elements within. The soul's inherent light can be expanded through consistent practice like meditation. The human body contains a network of 72,000 nāḍīs, with Iḍā, Piṅgalā, and Suṣumnā being primary. Iḍā, the moon channel, governs emotion and water; Piṅgalā, the sun channel, governs consciousness and fire. Their balance is vital. The power of the human brain is immense, evident in modern technology. Negative thoughts attack the thyroid gland at the Viśuddhi; purification comes through prāṇāyāma and balanced thinking. Sarasvatī is the goddess of knowledge and speech residing in the vocal cords. Mastery in any field requires dedicated practice and respect for the source of inspiration. Continuous spiritual practice dissolves negativity, bringing inner light.

Maya is a big cheater

The planetary influences and days of the week affect all beings, not just humans. Constellations and lines on the body, like those on the foot sole, indicate influences. Destructive patterns in a person can bring unrest to an entire household. The illusion of Māyā is a great cheat, depicted as a snake that silently drains one's life force. It binds beings through the three guṇas. All are caught in the cycle of existence, ground between the stones of life and death like grain in a mill. Only through sincere sādhanā and the Guru's guidance can one avoid being crushed. Before the great dissolution, Mahāpralaya, those who realize the truth merge into Brahman. The soul has no gender; duality is an illusion. One must practice diligently, love all creatures, and transcend attachment to be free from the cycle of birth and death.

Chakras in the human being

Yoga is the science of the body, mind, consciousness, and soul. A chakra is a cycle revolving around a central point, like a drop within a fog, representing the soul. This central point is mirrored at the navel, a mighty circle. Life begins as a tiny drop of consciousness, developing from invisible to visible, holding all ancestral information as positive energy and light. Meditation awakens awareness of one's level of existence. Chakras are imaginative representations, but their reality is described in sacred texts. Two energies exist within a chakra: negative, painful darkness or positive, supreme light called Śabda Brahman. This sound, or nāda, is the essence. All is located along the spinal column, beginning from one bindu, containing the five elements. The human consists of five bodies: nourishment, energy, mind, knowledge, and the body of desire for action. The mind is a reflection of the senses, receiving all knowledge through five perceptual senses and influencing action through five active senses. Consciousness exists in states from unconscious to supreme, dormant within the chakras. One must simply become aware and limit worldly desires. All chakras lead to the fifth, the Viśuddhi cakra at the throat, connected to the thyroid gland. Negativity swallowed in life loads this center. In myth, Śiva drank poison but held it at his throat, purifying it, turning his throat blue. One should not swallow psychic problems. A purification technique exists, but one must first cleanse the three primary energy channels. Psychic problems are a cause of disease; purification addresses this.

Practice yoga asanas starting from a relaxed position. Perform Marjari asana and its variations for spinal health. Execute breathing exercises with specific ratios. Practice Bhuñamānāsana to benefit the spine and discs. Observe the flow of prana from the manipura chakra throughout the entire body. Conclude with Nāḍī Śodhana pranayama, focusing on deep, soundless, and relaxed breath with awareness of each inhalation and exhalation. The exhalation should be longer. Observe the breath without influencing it, feeling peace and harmony. Chant Om three times to end.

An anecdote tells of women painted gold who died because their skin could not breathe; this illustrates that our entire skin breathes prāṇa. Tight clothing like jeans restricts this flow. The body has 72,000 nerves, a network where blockages cause disease. Natural treatments from Prakṛti, unlike altered chemicals, heal without side effects by becoming one with the body. Marriage symbolizes a sacred merger, a knot or gland from which new life emerges, aligning with natural cycles. Lineage and tradition preserve this purity. Sound originates from the navel; conscious speech creates positive or negative vibrations affecting our nerves and organs. Practices like Vajrāsana activate the Vajra Nāḍī, promoting digestion and energy flow by awakening awareness in the body.

Begin the practice of āsanas, prāṇāyāma, and meditation. Close the eyes and attune to the practice. Scan and relax the entire body. Observe the complete yogic breath. The first āsana is Ānanda Āsana, the posture of relaxation. Lie down comfortably and consciously relax each part of the body. Physical relaxation leads to spiritual relaxation. This posture must be performed at the beginning and end of every session. Next, train in abdominal breathing by placing a hand on the abdomen and observing its movement. Conscious abdominal breathing leads to relaxation and improves circulation. Practice stretching the body by extending the limbs in rhythm with the breath. This releases accumulated tension. Perform head turns and twists while lying down to increase spinal mobility and harmonize the breath. Always observe the effect of each exercise. Move through shoulder exercises while standing to relax and strengthen the joints. Shift body weight from leg to leg to strengthen muscles and improve balance. Conclude by returning to Ānanda Āsana. Scan the body and observe the deepening relaxation. Gradually conclude the practice by moving the fingers and toes. Rise carefully, always moving from lying down through a transitional seated position.

Thinking of Gurudev
