Dharma & Karma

A discourse on human purpose, dharma, and the nature of religion.

"Humans are protectors; they are created as protectors, not as destroyers. Therefore, it is valid that two principles are essential for humans: karma and dharma."

"To realize your relation is the religion: your relation to God. And what is the relation to God? We are His children. We are the essence of Him."

The speaker explains the unique human gift of intellect and the foundational principles of karma (action and consequence) and dharma (duty). Dharma is explored as both one's specific role in life and as "religion," which is defined first as realizing one's relationship to the Creator, and second as following universal ethical principles like kindness and service. The talk posits that these ethical principles originate from the ancient tradition of yoga.

The one Creator has brought forth 8.4 million species within creation, and one of them is the human being. What is special that humans possess is the intellect. God has given humans intellect so that they may develop it limitlessly, understand good and bad, and comprehend the suffering and happiness of others. Humans are protectors; they are created as protectors, not as destroyers. Therefore, it is valid that two principles are essential for humans: karma and dharma. Karma is action; whatever you do will return to you. And dharma is obligation, one's duties. Follow your dharma. For example, the dharma of fire is to give heat. If fire does not give heat, then we will not call it fire—it is merely a picture. The dharma of our eyes is to see. If we do not see anymore, then we are known as blind. There is the dharma of the mother. What is the dharma of the mother? And the dharma of the father, the dharma of children towards their parents, the dharma of a husband towards his wife, and the dharma of a wife towards her husband. This is known as dharma. Generally, dharma is translated as religion. But if we understand what religion is, it has two meanings. One meaning is relation. So religion means relation. To realize your relation becomes the religion: your relation to God. And what is the relation to God? We are His children. We are the essence of Him. Just as any kind of liquid on this earth originates from the ocean, all creatures on this earth originate from God. To realize your relation is the religion. Unless you realize your relation, you will be suffering; you will be in darkness. Just as children are unhappy until they find their parents. Secondly, religion means to follow, to preserve, and to protect ethical and moral principles in human society: to serve, to help, to love, to be kind, to be good. That is what religion teaches us. These principles are the principles of yoga. And yoga is one of the most ancient or oldest traditions. There is no other religion existing on this earth older than yoga. Every religion on this earth today, if it contains these principles—love, belief, prayer, help, kindness, mercy—then that religion originates from yoga, because love unites, and that is called bhakti. So that again becomes the obligation, the duty of humans: to be kind, to be good, to protect, and so on. That is again the dharma. Those who do not follow dharma create bad karma, and whoever creates bad karma must face the consequences. Recording location: USA, Washington, Seminar
