God, maya, reality

A spiritual discourse on perceiving divinity and the nature of illusion.

"God is everywhere. God is in everything. Without Him, not even a blade of grass can grow."

"This world is compared with a dream. What we see now, after a few minutes, it will be like a dream; it is gone."

The speaker describes the devotional vision of God's presence in all creation, leading to an ethical imperative against unnecessary harm to plants and animals. The discourse then explores the nature of māyā and saṃsāra, using analogies like mistaking a shell for silver or a mirage for water to illustrate how reality is perceived within illusion, ultimately comparing worldly existence to a dream.

God is everywhere. God is in everything. Without Him, not even a blade of grass can grow. Everywhere, in everything, is God. The devotee sees this. Everywhere and in everything, God is. The devotee sees all this. God is in everything and everywhere, and the devotee sees it. Therefore, do not destroy God's work. Do not cut things unnecessarily. Do not kill animals. All are God's creatures. Respect them, love them, feed them. Therefore, respect the work of God; do not destroy the plants, do not eat the animals. Nourish them, but do not eat them. Do not destroy the divine creation without any need; do not cut anything without need; do not kill animals. Respect them, love them, feed them, but do not eat them. This world is lighted. This world is living. This world is living through the light of Rāma. We are illuminated, and the Illuminator is the difference. It is that light of God. He is the Lord of māyā and jñāna, the source of all guṇas, the qualities. Through His help and through His light, even in this moha, in ignorance, you see the reality in this māyā. With His help, with His light, even in this fog, even in this unconsciousness, you can see the reality. It is like seeing silver in a shell. We see a beautiful shining and think it is silver. You can collect the shells, but you cannot obtain silver from them. Though there is no silver, we see it as silver—that beautiful shining. That is māyā. We see in the sunlight what looks like water flowing, but without rain, there is no water there. This is unreality throughout the whole three worlds. But still, these doubts, this confusion cannot be removed. This is saṃsāra. This is saṃsāra. We see reality in unreality and we see unreality in reality. We see reality in non-reality and non-reality in reality. What is existing is not existing, and what is not existing is seen as existing. Again, this saṃsāra is existing in duality. But likewise, the people of saṃsāra are living through the source of God, through the help of God. People who live in saṃsāra live through God. Though saṃsāra is unreality, and we know it gives us trouble and struggle, you feel that the suffering in saṃsāra is also unreal, like saṃsāra itself. Tulsīdāsa gives an example: in a dream, someone cuts your head, and you suffer. This suffering can only be removed when you wake up. When you wake up, there is no one who has cut your head. Your head is very nicely on your body. Therefore, this world is compared with a dream. What we see now, after a few minutes, it will be like a dream; it is gone. So what is constantly changing is not reality. Who knows, perhaps we are just dreaming now. We are all sitting here in a dream. That is it. Saṃsāra is like a dream.
