What to think

A spiritual discourse on overcoming worldly suffering through devotion and self-inquiry.

"When the ocean is dried up, then I have no more worry about crossing it. For the bhaktas of the Lord, the devotees of God, the ocean dries up."

"Always think of God. All other thinking can disappoint you. But thinking of God will never disappoint you."

The speaker offers guidance on transcending the ocean of worldly troubles (saṃsāra) by shifting one's thinking. He explains that all stress and sorrow are created by the mind, and prescribes a meditation of self-inquiry through specific questions: "What did I think? Why did I think?" The ultimate answer is to constantly think of God, which burns away sins and allows one to cross the ocean of ignorance, akin to the intense longing (prem-viraha) of a devotee.

When the ocean is dried up, then I have no more worry about crossing it. My ocean is dry, and I have no more worries about crossing the ocean. For the bhaktas of the Lord, the devotees of God, the ocean dries up. Or it remains so little that you can overcome it. This is called the ocean of worldly troubles. It is called saṃsāra. "Sar" means the essence. And "saṃ" means nothing; it is senseless. Everything is essence-less. Then why are you worried about this? Why are you worried? Why are you bothered about anything? What comes will come, and what goes will go. You will only be a witness. You are sitting on the bank of the river, and many ferries, many boats are coming and going; you are just observing. Everything is in your mind. Your mind has created everything. Stress is created by your mind. All sorrow is created by your mind, so change the thinking, that's all. Always, what should I think? What did I think? Why did I think? What should I think? And why should I think? These are the questions put into the meditation of self-inquiry. These are the questions I raised in self-meditation. What did I think? Analyze what you have been thinking. When you know what you did think, then ask, why did you think like this? And then you will find the cause of your thinking. And then say, why should I think? It doesn't matter what it was, but why should I think? And if I should not think, then what should I think? What should I think? Always think of God. Tell your mind, then think, Mahāprabhujī said, "My Satgurū Dev has put the jādu," you know, jādu means hypnotizing. Jādu means miracle, or jādu means magic. So my Gurudev has made such a miracle that wherever I see, I see only Rāma. This is very important. Prem viraha. Prem is love. And virahī is longing. Intensive longing desires. You can't sleep, you can't wake up, you can't walk, you can't stop. Everything is so intensive; you always remember your beloved one. When you sleep, you dream about your beloved one. When you wake up, you remember Him. When you eat, when you walk, that's called prem-viraha. And that's why Mahāprabhujī has given the name to His bhajan book, "Padviranī Viraha," the bhajans of the viraha. When you have that kind of vairāgya, that kind of longing, then you can write such bhajans. That's your feelings, what you are writing. That's your thinking, what you are putting on a piece of paper. What did I think? Why did I think? What should I think? And why should I think? Now, what should I think? Think of God. All other thinking can disappoint you. But thinking of God will never disappoint you. Therefore, all sins will be automatically burned away. And without doing too hard tapasyā sādhanā, you will be able to cross the ocean of ignorance.
