explanation of bhajan HAT CHOR MANA

A discourse on a spiritual bhajan and the call to self-remembrance.

"O mind, give up your hatha. Abandon your stubbornness, your arguments, your disputes, your own will, and come with me. I will reveal to you the secret of the Ātmā."

"Within this case made of five elements, a swan lives inside. The swan signifies the Ātmā, your own Self. You yourself are that beautiful swan."

A speaker unpacks the meaning of a bhajan by Mahāprabhujī, interpreting it as a call from one's own consciousness (cetanā) to the mind. The theme is abandoning worldly stubbornness to attain Self-knowledge. The talk advises seeking the Master's presence mentally for peace, warns against being ensnared by materialism, and emphasizes that the divine, formless reality resides within, not outside.

Recording location: Czech Republic, Strilky, Summer seminar

This is a very beautiful bhajan composed by Mahāprabhujī. Its theme is precisely the one we have been exploring all week. It says: "Hata chhod manā, chal sang mere, toj ātmā bhed batāvat he." It is an address to the mind: "O mind, give up your hatha." Abandon your stubbornness, your arguments, your disputes, your own will, and come with me. I will reveal to you the secret of the Ātmā. I will show you the Ātmā. Who is speaking to whom? Your own Self, your consciousness, your cetanā—let us say your cetanā. Cetanā means that which is conscious within you. It is saying to your mind: "Do not be lazy. Do not run here and there. Come with me. I will show you the Ātmā, and then you will be happy." You will be supremely happy. In this ever-changing world, there is no true happiness. So, give up the will for which you are fighting here in this world. Come, come with me. I will take you there and show you the Ātmā. Give up your hatha. Come with me, I will show you the Ātmā. You should always go to the Master. Then all your doubts will be removed. So, whenever you have time, concentrate or meditate. Feel the nearness of the Master. After the seminar, when you go home, you will of course have to work in this worldly atmosphere. There will always be different situations. Whenever you wish for peace and a peaceful atmosphere, simply close your eyes and feel that we are here together. That is why I told you this afternoon, "Let us just sit and enjoy this nature and this atmosphere." You should absorb this beautiful picture into your consciousness, like an artist or painter who observes nature and then paints everything. So, though you may be physically far away, mentally you can be together. "Tum jaye raho gurū ke charaṇame"—go to the Master; then all your doubts will be removed. This bodily case is made of five elements. And within this case, a swan lives inside. The swan is living within this case made of five elements. The swan signifies the Ātmā, your own Self. You yourself are that beautiful swan. Mother, father, all relatives—they will not help you attain ātmajñāna (Self-knowledge). They will only sink you deeper into the worldly ocean. Why have you lost your knowledge? Why have you made your heart so hard? Are you not ashamed of this? You will regret it one day. Do not close your heart to God. For the sake of a few material things, a little māyā, you have forgotten God. This, you know, is a major problem in business. Just for a little greed for money, one forgets God and begins to lie and lie. The greatest liar is the businessman. If a businessman does not lie, the business will not run. And when a person is lying, at that moment he or she has forgotten God. For such trivial things, you forgot God? What a shame. We should not forget God. Now, wake up from this ignorance. I will show you your Self, your form, your reality. I will show you that Divine One for whom the yogīs meditate. That One is endless, immeasurable. You cannot measure that Formless One, who is within your body. Why are you suffering so much and searching outside? It is within you. I met my perfect Master, Śrī Devpurījī and Swāmījī, and he showed me that divine darśan, the divine Self. O my mind, give up the hatha and come with me; I will show you the Ātmā, Siddhipna and Bhagavān, Siddhipna and Bhagavān. --- Recording location: Czech Republic, Strilky, Summer seminar
