About Daya

A spiritual discourse on the foundational principles of dharma and sin, based on a verse by Tulsidas.

"Dayā dharm kā mūl hai, pāp mūl abhimān. The roots of religion, the roots of spirituality...is Dayā. Mercy, kindness, humbleness."

"Tulsī dayā na chhoḍiye, jab tak ghaṭ me prāṇ. Therefore, the great saint Tulsīdāsjī says, 'Don't give up your mercy as long as you have life in your heart.'"

A speaker elaborates on the core teaching that compassion (dayā) is the root of righteousness (dharma), while ego (abhimān) is the root of sin. He explains dayā as synonymous with non-violence (ahiṃsā) and contrasts essential animal behavior with excessive human action. The talk expands to describe all beings' search for happiness, ultimately found only in God, using the metaphor of gravity as the love that draws everything back to its origin.

Dayā dharm kā mūl hai, pāp mūl abhimān. Tulsī dhyāna chhoḍiye, jab lāk ghaṭ me, prāṇ siyāvar Rām Chandra kī, Oṃpati Mahādeva kī jai. Dayā dharm kā mūl hai, pāp mūl abhimān. The roots of religion, the roots of spirituality—the tree of spirituality, the tree of religion—is Dayā. Mercy, kindness, humbleness. When mercy is removed from the heart, then the tree of spirituality or the tree of religion will fall down. In that heart where there is no mercy, there is not a human. Even animals have some mercy in their hearts. They only do something as much as they need for their food, that's all. But humans are doing more than necessary. Dayā dharma means many, many things. And dharma means many things, not only religion, but that religion, relation to God, the highest principle. Ahiṃsā paramo dharma. The highest principle is ahiṃsā. Ahiṃsā means mercy, non-violent—physically, mentally, socially, spiritually—do not harm. Dayā dharm kā mūl hai, pāp mūl abhimān, and the roots of sin is the ego. The tree of sin is standing on the roots of the ego, proudness. This comes from ignorance. Tulsī dayā na chhoḍiye, jab tak ghaṭ me prāṇ. Therefore, the great saint Tulsīdāsjī says, "Don't give up your mercy as long as you have life in your heart." After when life is gone, then, of course, you can't do anything. So it is the love, it is the mercy, it is the kindness, understanding that makes the humans. Love towards all creatures, mercy towards all creatures. Have mercy on them. Life is dear to all. No one wants to die, either humans or animals. All love their children, whether they're human or animals. All love their parents. They love themselves too. Every creature, consciously or unconsciously, is searching for happiness. They are longing for the joy, the happiness. And real happiness is only in the name of God. Some are running behind money, some are running behind position, politics, powers, someone is running, longing, looking for the partner, different things. But at last, everywhere will be disappointment. Only God is the ultimate truth and the joy, and the joy we are longing for is a part of God, because the origin of our inner self is God, and that is searching for God. When we throw a piece of stone high up in the sky, the stone comes back to the earth. Why? Because this small stone is part of this big earth. There is a relation between the stone and the earth. And it is that love, that relation, which brings the stone back to the origin, to the earth. We call it gravity, and in other languages, you can say it is love. Love of belonging. Where do you belong? You must find this out. Until you will not find it, you will be suffering. And when you will find it, then immense joy and happiness will be there. Then you will be at home, then all longings will stop. Until we don't find the reality, we will be unhappy. Searching here and there, changing the things, changing the relations, suffering out of jealousy, out of unhappiness, greediness, desires, unhappy, suffering, restlessness, because you didn't find the satisfaction within you. Find that. So mercy, forgiveness, understanding to all. Recording location: Czech Republic, Strilky, Summer seminar
