Know thy self

A spiritual discourse on the purpose of human life and the path to self-realization.

"You are not this body. It is your body, it is your mind. It is your thinking, it is your consciousness. Then who are you?"

"Yoga means union: the union of the individual self with the cosmic self. Though you are a part of the cosmic self, why can't you unite with it? Because in due time we have developed certain qualities, and those qualities are not that quality which is a God quality."

An unnamed spiritual teacher delivers a talk on the fundamental questions of existence. He emphasizes the need to realize, not just answer, the questions of identity, origin, purpose, and destination. He outlines the path, stating that human life is given for this realization, which requires meditation, mantra, and the guidance of a spiritual master to achieve moksha (freedom). The discourse defines yoga as this unifying practice and concludes with a prayer for health and world peace.

To realize the happiness in life, contemplate deeply about your existence. Consider human values. Do you know what your life means? Do we know what it means to be human? How precious is this human body? You cannot buy this body anywhere. You cannot lend this body to anyone. Perhaps it is the only chance God has given us. For what purpose? To help others, to protect others, to give your love to others, and to know what God is. What is the purpose of this life? And who are you? Know thyself. Do you know who you are? You are not this body. It is your body, it is your mind. It is your thinking, it is your consciousness. Then who are you? Who is it that constantly says, "It is my body, my thinking, my feelings, my emotions"? Know thyself; it is the answer to all questions and the solution to all problems. Do you know from where you came, your past life, how and from where did you come? And do we know why we came? And do we know where we will go? If you know where you will go, then you are not afraid of death. We are all afraid of death because we still do not know where we will go. Who am I? From where do I come? Why did I come? And where will I go? These are the four questions that should be realized, not merely answered. And for that realization, life is given. Then, in meditation, you begin to sit and meditate and pray. There you need a mantra. A mantra is a personal prayer. And then we need spiritual guidance, the spiritual master. Before, we do not. We have our physical abilities, we have our mental abilities, but they are limited. We have our spiritual abilities, but they are also limited. Within our limit, we can do something. But to go beyond our limit to achieve something, we need external help. There is the psychic of the Master, and the guidance of the Master is needed—not to become dependent, but to become independent. That we call Mokṣa, freedom. A human life is a mystery, a glorious life you have in your hand now. The light of God you have in hand, everything; do not miss it. Utilize it. So, yoga is the way to the divine self and the way to world peace. It is a way to good health and a way to harmony, if you practice. Otherwise, not. Tons of theory is just nothing compared with a gram of practice. Practice 24 hours. Lead your life according to those spiritual principles. Finally, yoga means union: the union of the individual self with the cosmic self. Though you are a part of the cosmic self, why can't you unite with it? Because in due time we have developed certain qualities, and those qualities are not that quality which is a God quality. You cannot mix salt and water together. You cannot unite the salt and water together. The salt may dissolve from the solid form into the liquid form, but the water will remain salty because the salt is inside. Similarly, when this physical body will die, do not think that you will merge into the cosmic self. It is not so easy. We have to develop the qualities to merge into that One. The quality unites. It is easy to find the color, but not the quality. So do not remain stuck on the colors only; seek the quality. We have to develop the divine qualities in us. Spirituality means purity—pureness in the actions, in the thoughts, and in the words. That becomes a Yogī, that is known as the enlightened one, that's known as the self-realized one, that's known as the liberated one. So blessed are they who will realize this in this life. And I wish you all that you will be those blessed ones. I pray to God for your good health and long life, divine protection, and peace for your country and for the whole world. God bless you. Amen. --- Recording location: Slovenia, Murska Sobota, Seminar
