About bhajans

Bhajans are the concrete teachings of saints, conveying wisdom that cannot be manipulated. Listening to them purifies karma and influences spirituality and health, like light dispelling darkness. All beings seek happiness, but humans often search in material things like money or property, which offer only temporary joy. Lasting happiness is found in spirituality, cultivated through prayers, mantras, and bhajans. Your consciousness is purified by its environment, just as fabric is affected by the water it is placed in. While kīrtan is good and emotional, bhajans contain more direct teaching and wisdom. Composing a bhajan requires diving deep into one's consciousness. Spiritual nourishment is rich and not easily digested, but it must increase day by day, gradually enlightening consciousness until one's way of life becomes saintly.

"To listen to them, even without understanding, holds great benefit. It influences our spirituality and also our health."

"The joy of the joy is less than the sorrows of the joy. Therefore, we find that real joy in spirituality, in bhajans."

Time is passing, but it was good satsaṅg and bhajans. Bhajans are the real teachings of the saints. When the teaching is conveyed through bhajan, one cannot manipulate the words. Therefore, the true teachings reside in the poems or bhajans; these are the words of the great masters, Gurū Bhajans. To listen to them, even without understanding, holds great benefit. It influences our spirituality and also our health, for it carries positive energy and vibration, removing obstacles. It is like a dark room: when we switch on a light, the darkness vanishes. Similarly, when bhajans are sung, the darkness of our karmas disappears. So, in your house or flat, it is advisable to play this music, these bhajans. The kind of music you play determines the atmosphere created. Some music awakens different feelings and creates more karmas, while some bhajans and music purify karmas. Your inner self feels happy. It is said every creature wishes to be happy; no one desires unhappiness. All are searching day and night for happiness. Humans, too, search for happiness. Other creatures may not know; they simply follow their feelings. They also experience happiness and unhappiness, pain and pleasure, but they cannot make decisions. Humans can decide. Yet, though humans search for happiness, very few know where it lies. Otherwise, one searches for happiness in money, houses, property, friends, or various hobbies. Ultimately, it is said you will not find happiness in all this. There are two kinds of happiness: one temporary and one everlasting. Temporary happiness belongs to the materialistic world, but permanent happiness resides in spirituality. The way to develop this spirituality is to place yourself in circumstances filled with positive energy and spirituality—through prayers, mantras, yajñas, havan, ceremonies, singing bhajans, and singing the glory of God. This means you are swimming in the ocean of spirituality, and that purifies us. Just as fabric placed in dirty water becomes dirty, and in clean water becomes clean, so too does your consciousness reflect where you are. Thus, bhajans are a concrete teaching. Kīrtan is also good, but it contains less teaching. Kīrtan is a repetition of one or two sentences; of course, it is the name of God and contains everything. Yet, that is more emotional, more bhāva. Through this bhāva, one becomes a bhakta. There are different kinds of bhāva. If you go to disco music, there is also bhāva and emotion, but it is a different bhāva. If you go to temple music, there is a different bhāva. But when you sing bhajans, there are different words and indications; it is the teaching of holy men. The best way to learn is through bhajans. Each word contains an immense amount of wisdom. To write a bhajan is not easy. You must have that state of mind, that consciousness. To compose a bhajan is to carefully select beautiful pearls. You must dive very deep to catch them, to find them. You must dive deep into your wisdom. That is real joy; the other is merely material happiness. This material joy is temporary. That is why I often say: "The joy of the joy is less than the sorrows of the joy." Therefore, we find that real joy in spirituality, in bhajans. Spirituality is a very rich nourishment. It is not easy to digest; it is not everyone's job. Spirituality that lasts is the achievement. Otherwise, constantly changing is not a spiritual existence. So, slowly but surely, day by day, it should increase, never decrease. That is how, gradually, our consciousness becomes enlightened. Consider when you go to the mountains. If the weather is clear, as it was yesterday, you see at six in the morning that dawn has already begun. Until 7:13 or 7:15, the sun rises. It is slowly, slowly no longer dark. From the darkness, light breaks out. Slowly, slowly it becomes brighter and brighter. That is how, gradually, our consciousness is rapidly enlightening. Suddenly, your way of life becomes such that, automatically, you are like a saint.
