Say NO to plastic

We are destroying our water and must act. If we continue polluting, our seventh generation will have nothing to drink. We have polluted rivers, lakes, and oceans. Do not say you can do nothing or follow others blindly. Do not be like sheep that follow each other into a hole. Make one resolution: refuse plastic. Take a cotton bag when shopping; do not buy disposable plastic items. This is not a small act but a significant one. Begin today. Write "Say no to plastic" on letters and emails. Use stickers. Awaken consciousness in others and teach children. This is how we start to protect our water.

"If you cannot give your children something better, you should at least be able to leave them clean water."

"Say no to plastic. This is how we will awaken consciousness in people."

Filming location: Wellington, New Zealand

In the Earth dialogue held in Lyon, France, it was said that if we continue to destroy and pollute this planet, our seventh generation will have nothing to drink. If you cannot give your children something better, you should at least be able to leave them clean water. If you cannot give someone food or clothing, you should at least be able to offer a glass of clean water to a thirsty person. But where is the water? Soon, not even our tears will be clean; we have polluted our rivers, we have polluted our lakes, and we are polluting the ocean. We are polluting everything. Do not say, "I can't do anything," or "Everyone is doing this, what should I do?" Let others do what they do, but you should not do what they do. Do not be like the sheep that walks and falls into a hole, and the next one walking behind also falls in, and so on. I do not know if the sheep in New Zealand behave this way, but Indian sheep certainly do. If you can make one saṅkalpa, one resolution, say from today onwards: "I will not use plastic things." This is a very small thing. When you go shopping, take a basket or a textile bag, a cotton bag. If you do not have cotton bags, the Yoga Society will supply them for you. They have beautiful cotton bags printed with "Yoga in Daily Life"—this is good advertising and also does good. Do not buy anything that you will throw away, like cups, plates, and spoons made of plastic. We think this is a very little thing, but it is not little; it is very big. Buy or make yourself one cotton bag and write on it: "Say no to plastic." I was in India on one of the islands, called the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. It is very, very clean and nice. At the airport when you arrive, there is a very large sign that reads: "Say no to plastic, please don't bring plastic." So let us begin. If you write any letter, write on the back where you put your address, and below it write: "Say no to plastic." If you send someone an email, write: "Say no to plastic." Wherever you are, whatever you are doing, wherever you can, make a sticker and say: "Say no to plastic." This is how we will awaken consciousness in people. Tell your children also, and they will say, "Really, I don't want a plastic bag."
