Be the change yourself

A human can be medicine for another. My early teaching involved a diplomat's wife who brought candies, declaring a miracle: after three weeks of yoga, her husband changed positively. I was happy for her, but in reality, she had changed, becoming calm instead of hectic. This illustrates "Be the change you want to see," which applies in all life aspects, including for partners. I wish for you a good person for mutual happiness. People endure stressful work and harsh words for money, which in this age is treated as God. From this dispiriting struggle, you return home yearning for a nest with kind words, a sweet smile, and understanding—a human heart. A partner is not solely for sexual life, which may be the least priority; you need understanding for a happy life. Those home hours should bring immense energy, happiness, confidence, and love, enabling better work and happiness the next day. This defines true partnership or family relationship.

"Since I have been practicing yoga with you for three weeks now, my husband has changed so much, positively."

"You expect someone there with kind words, a sweet smile, a warm heart, and beautiful, mutual understanding."

My very first experiences in Europe involved teaching yoga when I arrived in Vienna. Before noon, I would hold classes for diplomatic or English-speaking people. Most of the attendees were diplomatic ladies, including a few ambassadors' wives. One day, an American diplomat's wife brought me a large can of candies and said, "Swāmījī, a miracle happened." I replied, "Yes, I hope it is something good." She said, "Yes, yes," and then asked, "Tell me, please, how does it function?" I asked, "What?" She explained, "Since I have been practicing yoga with you for three weeks now, my husband has changed so much, positively. That's a miracle. I practice, and he changes." I said, "Yes, I'm happy for you." In reality, she had changed herself. She had become calm. Previously, she had been too hectic and too stressed. That is why Mahātmā Gandhījī said so beautifully, "Be the change you want to see." This applies in every direction and every aspect of life, including for partners. I wish for you that God will send you a good person, so that you may be happy and that person may be happy. You see, sometimes it is said that a human is a medicine for another human. You come from hard work; everyone is struggling in life. You hear good and bad words from colleagues, some hard words from your boss, and encounter different temperaments from clients—everything you have to swallow down. Why? Because of dear money. In this Kali Yuga, money is God. From this kind of hectic life, where you struggle every day feeling dispirited, tired, unhappy, and disappointed, you want to return to your nest. You expect someone there with kind words, a sweet smile, a warm heart, and beautiful, mutual understanding—someone who asks you, "How are you, dear? Just relax, I will do things for you." This is a human for a human. A partner is not meant only for sexual life; I think that is the last thing you truly want. What you need is a human heart, understanding. Then your life is a happy life. Those few hours you spend at home should be filled with immense energy, happiness, confidence, and love. There should be a lot of energy, love, understanding, and trust. The next day, you will be able to work better. You are happy. This is what I understand as a partnership, or friendship, or the relationship between parents, brothers, and sisters.
