Sat - Cit - Ananda (Part 1)

A spiritual discourse on the nature of Śiva, reality, and Vedāntic philosophy.

"Śiva means liberation. Śiva means consciousness... that Ātmā is within you; that consciousness, the Śiva, is within you."

"Brahman is truth. That truth, that reality, is eternal and unchangeable. 'Jagat mithyā.'... this world is unreal, meaning nothing is permanent. Everything is changing."

The speaker explores the concepts of Śiva as immortal consciousness and the Ātmā within all beings. Delving into Vedānta, they discuss the nature of reality (Sat) versus the changing, impermanent world (Mithyā), explaining Brahman as the eternal truth and the recycled, shifting nature of worldly existence and the individual soul (Jīvātmā).

Recording location: Slovenia, Kranj, Weekend seminar

It was a beautiful bhajan: "Śivohaṁ, śivohaṁ, śivohaṁ, vahiatma, saccidānandamayahu." "Śivohaṁ." Śiva means liberation. Śiva means consciousness. Śiva means immortality. Śiva means the light, the destroyer of the darkness, everlasting, eternal, cosmic consciousness. No one has manifested Him, and that Ātmā is within you; that consciousness, the Śiva, is within you: "Satyam Śivaṁ Sundaram." Truth, consciousness, and beauty. "Ajar amara ātmā." "Ajar" means unborn. It is not standing on some roots. "Nirakar," formless. "Amar," which never dies. Immortal. That Ātmā is not born and will not die. The space in this hall is not born and will not die. Yes, one thing will happen: different objects will be brought into this hall, and what is created one day will be destroyed. Destroyed by itself. It has a limitation. Maybe 20 million. Billions, but that is limited. What is after that? Therefore, immortal means no dying, no changes, nor birth, nor death. "Sac-cid-ānanda, sac-cid-ānanda." "Sat" is the truth. Not this truth that someone stole a chocolate and another said, "No, I did not." Someone said, "No, that is lies," and another one said, "No, that is not true." Not this play what humans are doing. This is done according to the human's self-protection, self-satisfaction of their ego. But the truth means the reality. Reality and non-reality. Can you last drink something and eat chocolate? Reality and non-reality. Reality means unchangeable. No time can change it; no language, no mentality, no religion, no philosophy can change the reality. Unchangeable. A non-reality is changeable. Therefore, in Vedānta philosophy, it is said only that one that is Brahman is the reality. And where there are two, it is unreality. Brahman is truth. That truth, that reality, is eternal and unchangeable. "Jagat mithyā." "Mithyā" means unreality. Some do not accept this. There is a Dvaita philosophy and an Advaita philosophy. The logic says we cannot say this world is unreal; we cannot say this table is unreal. If you think it is unreal, hit your head here, and you will see if it is real or unreal. The body will die, definitely, but the element will unite into the elements. It will not die. So, in reality, the body also will not die. This function will stop. That collective work will be split, and that is happening: one makes a big, nice society, a harmonious society, then comes some disturbing factors; elements begin to destroy the society through gossiping, cussing, backbiting. They have nothing to do; they have only within them negative things and are searching for the negative in others. So, there are rare ones who unite. Many are they who divide. Love unites, and ignorance divides. Wisdom unites; ignorance divides. So, the body doesn't die also in that way. Water in the water element, fire in the fire element, earth in the earth element. The separation is painful for many. So, but here, "Brahma Śakti, Jagat Mithyā" means this world is unreal, meaning nothing is permanent. Everything is changing. Recycling. You will die. The body will be buried, will become good fertilizer, will go to the soil, good tomatoes will grow, you will eat the tomatoes, it will go into your body. That is called the recycling process. Similarly, the Jīva, Jīvātmā, is also reincarnating; the recycling system is the same. So here, "Jagat Mithyā" means nothing is permanent; it is changeable. How? Your partner in the beginning loved you very much. You are for him or for her a golden sun. Now he has changed. You are for him now a poisonous cobra around the neck. How did it change? The person is the same. You are the same. Something changed. And this kind of change means unreality. In Brahman, there is no change. Your Self, the divine Self, never changes. Therefore, "Brahman satya, jagat mithyā." So, Brahman is the truth. What is Brahman? Brahman is that which is everywhere, like in every atom, in empty space. That is cosmic consciousness. And that is within you, within me, within an ant, within a pig, and within the rabbit, and within the fish, and within your parents. It is the same Ātmā. So, "Sat" is called the truth. Not that truth that someone is talking a lie and someone is talking correctly, and this and that. This wise man said, "This is a parpanch." Parpanch in this world. Parpanch means all these complications which are running over. Marriage, dying, divorce, birth, death, working, not working, happiness, unhappiness, problems, stress. This is permanent in this world. You cannot solve this problem. Even the creator himself will incarnate, this problem will not be solved. So that's what is called saṃsāra. Saṃsāra, no sāra. There is no essence in it. But at the same time, without entering this mṛtiloka, this mortal world, there is no development. So the soul is descending on this planet to work, to develop the consciousness further. There are a lot of feelings, a lot of changes in your decisions. You are never satisfied. When you see on television one picture, immediately you want to see the next picture. Now what will happen next? We are always never satisfied. You want to go to the coast, the Adriatic coast, then you are looking forward to coming home to your beautiful flat, and when you end up going home, then you are looking forward to holidays. Is there any place where you think, "Now I am ever and ever happy and will change nothing"? Yes. That is in your heart. That is in your thinking. Therefore Vedānta said this world is created out of the mind. Now, how you feel, how you see, what is your progress, development, your conditions, everything is a product of your mind. What we see, the development in this world, is a man-made world. It can never be sustainable development. These are the dreams to create a sustainable development in this world. The sustainable world was created by God, and that we destroy it. And that will destroy him. --- Recording location: Slovenia, Kranj, Weekend seminar
