The sign of enlightenment

A spiritual discourse on balancing personal practice with worldly compassion and family harmony.

"We must clarify and harmonize our surroundings as well. If you become a fanatic, you become a selfish, egoistic person. That, again, will be an obstacle to your realization."

"Your being in this world should be like the sun. The sun rises on the horizon, and dawn breaks. Similarly, your love, your understanding, your kindness, your feeling of mercy—everything is in light."

The speaker advises against neglecting worldly duties and relationships in the pursuit of Self-realization, warning that fanaticism and selfishness are obstacles. Using analogies like the sun and a supermarket shopper, the talk emphasizes extending compassion, finding compromise within the family, and waking up earlier for personal practice to create a harmonious life that benefits society.

We should not ignore difficult inner states, nor should we become narrow-minded. There is suffering around you, and you say you are going toward Self-realization. Let your Self-realization wait a while. Extend a helping hand; cultivate higher values. We must clarify and harmonize our surroundings as well. If you become a fanatic, you become a selfish, egoistic person. That, again, will be an obstacle to your realization. Therefore, your being in this world should be like the sun. The sun rises on the horizon, and dawn breaks. Similarly, your love, your understanding, your kindness, your feeling of mercy—everything is in light. This is already the sign of those who are enlightened; they cannot do otherwise. So, do not be narrow in your thinking. There is a joke: There was a big supermarket with many things. When you enter, you have feelings: "I bought this, I bought that." There was one lady who always used to come home with three or four full bags, and then at home, those things were not used. One day, she went to the supermarket to buy only bread. When she goes to buy only milk, she gets tempted by different things, so she puts a carton of this and that in her cart. "Oh, I want this," she adds and adds. By saying, "Oh, I need coffee, I can practice yoga," it became the first time she made such a justification. She was very conflicted. You see how differences begin in your marriage. We must attend to it; it should not die. Slowly, slowly, you kill the love because you suddenly become so selfish. "Everything is nonsense. Everything is attachment. No husband, no wife. I want my God-realization." Oh, he will meditate—no doubt, disharmony will arise in the family. Take your personal time, which is your time. Wake up two hours earlier and peacefully sit in another room and practice. If your wife is sleeping and you sit there and say loudly, "Sit down, you disturb my sleep," then we have to compromise. Learn to compromise. There should be a place for tolerance. There is also a place for tolerance. Therefore, understand your husband's situation, understand your wife's situation, your family's situation, your neighbor's situation, and find a midway. Definitely, there is a midway for your development; that will make your life very happy. You will maintain a healthy, happy, joint, big system. People don't want family; they don't want to live with their parents. Kids who are 10 years old are already looking every year: "When will I be 18 so that I can move out from my parents?" Do not disturb the happiness you have within your family. That happiness cannot be found on the beach with some people who take drugs and so on. Who will be there for you? Your mother. If you make a mistake against your mother, she will take you on her lap; she will give you her shoulder. So too are our brothers and sisters. My suggestion is: the happy family. Yoga practice makes a better person; a better person creates a better family; a better family creates a better society; and a better society creates a better world, or world peace. That is why this message creates the happy family for the happy. Recording location: Australia, Brisbane, World Peace Tour 2005
