Sankalpa

A spiritual discourse on the power of resolve (saṅkalpa) and unwavering faith.

"When you possess this resolve, you will achieve your goal. Many people cannot complete such a journey because, in truth, they lacked a sufficiently strong saṅkalpa."

"It is not about practice alone. It is about being there, about being sure. That is all, and that is very important."

The speaker explains the necessity of a deep, long-term resolution to achieve any aim, using the example of a devotee's arduous pilgrimage to Mount Kailash. This principle is then applied to the spiritual path, emphasizing the unwavering, condition-less certainty of Mahāprabhujī's devotees as the ideal. The talk cautions against an intellectual, conditional approach to faith, advocating for acceptance and happiness regardless of outcomes.

When one has a particular aim, as Mahāprabhujī said, you must make your resolution with deep belief, and success will be yours. Therefore, when you wish to achieve something, you should form a saṅkalpa. This is not a short-term notion but a long-term commitment. I recall Dr. Shanti, who went to Mount Kailash two years ago. She made a strong saṅkalpa. At her age, with what one might call frail bones, I wondered how she would manage. Yet she succeeded. When you reach a certain high altitude in the mountains, every step is like walking half a kilometer. It demands immense willpower, physical strength, and mental fortitude. When you possess this resolve, you will achieve your goal. Many people cannot complete such a journey because, in truth, they lacked a sufficiently strong saṅkalpa. The same principle applies to the spiritual path. Many begin and then stop. You have witnessed this. First, you must be sure. There are still many bhaktas alive—devotees of Mahāprabhujī—who say, "If there is a God, then it was Mahāprabhujī." It is very moving to hear this from them. There are still people alive who experienced his presence, his love, his kind words, and his movements. Whatever you might offer them, they will not change their path. Of course, they accept everyone; they have free thinking. They adore every god, every form, any religion, any master, but the hero of their heart is Mahāprabhujī. They possess a natural way, a profound belief. You may not see them performing many outward practices, for it is not about practice alone. It is about being there, about being sure. That is all, and that is very important. This kind of saṅkalpa, this kind of certainty, is crucial. Furthermore, do not put God to the test; do not set conditions. A problem in the Western world is an excess of living in the intellect. This does not mean Eastern people lack intellect. Rather, Western people often reside in the intellect on a dry, barren plane. They constantly impose conditions. If a condition is not fulfilled, they change something again. Herein lies the mistake. This is not a play of intellect and emotion. There are no conditions or challenges to be set before God. Take it as it is. If it will be, it will be; if not, it will not be. In both conditions, remain happy. This acceptance is often missing, and that is why barriers arise. You try and try, but this is something you must change; you must give it up.
