Cooperation of the master and disciple

A spiritual narrative recounting a miraculous event involving a siddha master and his disciple.

"Such and such things are happening. I am going to my meditation room; do not disturb me."

"The disciple guided him, and within a second, the Master was back in his physical body. Afterwards, the Master gave that disciple the name Nābhājī."

The speaker tells the story of a great siddha who, upon hearing the distant prayer of a devotee in peril at sea, hastily projects his astral body to help but forgets his point of exit and cannot re-enter his physical form. His disciple, seeing the difficulty, projects his own astral body to guide the master back. The narrative then describes the legacy of that disciple, Nābhājī Mahārāja, who authored the sacred text Bhaktamālā, a compilation of biographies of great saints. The talk concludes with reflections on India as a holy land and the eternal nature of divine light and teaching.

There was a well-known master, a great siddha. He could travel with his astral body. He and his disciples were sitting in the āshram. Meanwhile, somewhere in the ocean, a devotee was traveling on a large ship, and the sea began to sink it. The devotee was praying and calling out, "Gurudev, if you cannot save me from this ocean, then how will you save me from the ocean of Māyā?" The Master heard the prayer of the devotee from thousands of kilometers away. He told his disciple, "Such and such things are happening. I am going to my meditation room; do not disturb me." The Master went quickly into the meditation room, sat down, and went with his astral body to help and protect the devotee. But he left in such haste that he hurried out of his physical body. Now, the Master was coming back, but he did not know where to re-enter his body. One should always enter through the same chakra from which one went out. It is generally said that when you dream, your astral body goes out from the Viśuddhi chakra. One should remain in Vajrāsana and not change posture—I am giving a commentary on this posture. In his astral body, the Master was circling around the āshram, and the disciple saw him there. The disciple knew there was some difficulty. So, the disciple also went out with his astral body. The Master had gone out through the nābhi, through the Maṇipūra chakra. The disciple guided him, and within a second, the Master was back in his physical body. Afterwards, the Master gave that disciple the name Nābhājī. This Nābhājī Mahārāja, the son of the saint, was very great, and he wrote a beautiful book. He gave the book the name Bhaktamālā. "Mālā" is like a garland, and "Bhakta" is devotee—the garland of the devotees. They are the scents, the most beautiful flowers in the garden of God. From that time, he wrote a short biography of all the great saints who were living in India. That book has about 3,000 or 4,000 pages, a very nice thick book in two volumes, and it is still available in India today—not in normal bookshops, but in some very special ones. If you read that book, you will know how many great saints there were and what miraculous lives they led. They had no handbags, suitcases, nothing—only a practice blanket. When you read about them, they are beautiful stories, so nice. They are all there, male and female. There is no difference in spirituality, in God's kingdom; there are no distinctions of male or female. Male and female is anatomical only on this planet, that is all. That Mahātmā Nābhājī Mahārāj, and his master—whose name, unfortunately, I cannot remember—lived there. Their āshram is about 50 or 60 kilometers away from Kailāsh āshram. It is a beautiful āshram, a beautiful temple, and it is declared a Siddhagati. In past times, there was hardly any village in India that did not have a saint. That is why India is a holy land, and it is where the incarnations of God mostly took place. How the people are now is different. You should not judge that holy land because of the people. If you are a Christian and you have a weapon factory creating wars, it does not mean we should blame Jesus. After seeing the different corners of the world, Holy Gurujī wrote a beautiful bhajan. So, you see, there have been, there is, and there will be the Divine Light. When the Master forgets for a while, then the disciple has to be ready to suggest something or tell something. The Master may forget, but the disciple must not forget. The Master can forget about things, but the teaching can never be forgotten. Recording location: Hungary, Vep, Summer seminar
