Story about Mahaprabhuji and Holy Guruji

A satsang discourse on the greatness of a guru and the lesson of receiving grace.

"Anyone who did not believe in God, any atheist who saw Mahāprabhujī, would be thoroughly colored with bhakti from the very first look."

"If you want to receive, then you should serve him. Therefore, Gurudev is always there. He will give you what you need. But if you doubt and are jealous, you will get nothing."

The speaker recounts stories from Śarmājī about the divine presence and power of Śrī Mahāprabhujī and his principal disciple, Holy Gurujī (Swāmī Mādhavānandajī). He narrates a specific lesson where a jealous disciple, Swāmī Maheshwarānanda, witnesses the effortless divine provision and authority granted to Gurujī, illustrating that grace is received through service and surrender, not jealousy. The talk emphasizes unwavering faith and warns against the barriers of doubt and envy within a spiritual community.

Śrī Mahāprabhujī had many, many disciples. Yesterday, Śarmājī and his wife recounted many things. When we speak in Hindi, we speak only of Mahāprabhujī and Gurujī—how great they were and how great they still are. As Śarmājī has been saying, you cannot imagine how great the personality of Śrī Mahāprabhujī was. Anyone who did not believe in God, any atheist who saw Mahāprabhujī, would be thoroughly colored with bhakti from the very first look. Physically, his appearance was magnificent, radiating light. Mahāprabhujī did not speak very much; he would just look at you, and that was everything. Holy Gurujī taught me many times that when Mahāprabhujī sang bhajans, no loudspeaker was necessary. On a peaceful, moonlit night during a full moon satsaṅg, people could hear his bhajan from kilometers away as if from a loudspeaker. You have been there; I was not. Śarmājī says he has no words and no power to speak or explain. Whenever he remembers, he is already swimming in an ocean of emotion. The gurus you have seen—their appearance, voice, words, movements, gentle smile—do not compare with me. I am just nothing. They had very bright faces. There were thousands, millions of bhaktas who came to Mahāprabhujī, and they remain his devotees. Many have moved to different parts of India, have families, and many have died of old age. There has always been jealousy among the disciples. This is a story I wish to tell, and you will read it again in Līlā Amṛt. All disciples were jealous of Gurujī. They thought Mahāprabhujī had given all his spiritual power to Holy Gurujī, Swāmī Mādhavānandajī. Why did Mahāprabhujī pay so much attention to him? Many disciples tried to have Mahāprabhujī send Holy Gurujī to Gujarat, to travel within India and not stay too much with him. Whenever Gurujī returned from a tour, he would greet Mahāprabhujī, who would ask, "How are you?" and then say, "Now you go there." He would just arrive, greet him, and then be told to go to Ahmedabad, Delhi, Calcutta, and so on. All officers, authorities, and ministers in the Indian Railway, from top to bottom, were Gurujī's disciples. Śarmājī's father held a very high position in the Railway and became Mahāprabhujī's disciple through Holy Gurujī. When people had problems in their jobs, they would not go to their boss or a minister; they would go to Gurujī. And Gurujī would say, "Go to Mahāprabhujī." Many, without even going to Gurujī, would go to Mahāprabhujī to ask that Gurujī help them. When Gurujī said something, no one could say no; it was done. Once, Holy Gurujī spoke to Mahāprabhujī: so many people came that it was like a headache. Every day, 50 or 60 people came only to complain about their duties or jobs, about being lost or dismissed. Mahāprabhujī said, "And what do you lose? You lose nothing. I have given you the power in your words; use it. I give to you, and you give further. If you tell someone to help a person and he is helped, he is great, and you lose nothing." In many departments across India, there is great devotion to saints and sādhus. In every walk of life, Gurujī had a very great, positive, spiritual influence. All other devotees were jealous. Why did Gurujī have this position? Why did he have so much power in his words and the appearance of Mahāprabhujī? Why did Mahāprabhujī give him everything? There was one disciple of Mahāprabhujī named Swāmī Maheshwarānanda. One day, he went to Mahāprabhujī and said, "You gave everything to Mādhavānandajī and to us you gave nothing." Mahāprabhujī said, "You should practice. You should know how to take the Guru Kṛpā." Swāmī Maheshwarānanda said, "Then please teach me, tell me how to take it." Mahāprabhujī said, "I cannot give you; only Holy Gurujī, Swāmī Mādhavānandajī, can give you. Go with him." He said, "No, I will not go with him." Mahāprabhujī said, "Go for one day at least; you will see." It was monsoon time. From Bola Guda Āshram to another railway station called Swameswar is about 10 to 15 kilometers; they had to walk. Gurujī was instructed by Mahāprabhujī to go to Gujarat. Mahāprabhujī said to Gurujī, "I have this one umbrella, and it is broken. Can you take it to be repaired?" At that time, life was very tough, and shops were not everywhere. Gurujī said, "Jokam, as your order." Then Mahāprabhujī said, "Send me some fresh green chilies and vegetables and this and that." Gurujī said, "Yes, sir." There were two or three more things. "And take this Maheshwarānand with you and send it back with him." Gurujī made praṇām. It was about eleven in the morning. Swāmī Maheshwarānanda went with Gurujī. Mahāprabhujī asked Holy Gurujī, "Should I give you some money? I told you only to send these things, but I didn't ask you for money. Can I?" Holy Gurujī said, "No, I don't want to carry money. You give it to me where I need it." The other one was listening. Holy Gurujī did not know anything about the dialogue between Swāmī Maheshwarānanda and Mahāprabhujī. Mahāprabhujī smiled and said, "Okay, my son, go." Holy Gurujī did not have even one cent in his pocket, no money, nothing—only a few bhajan books of Mahāprabhujī which he had published and was giving to bhaktas who could sing. There was only one train passing on that railway line, a super-fast train not scheduled to stop there. But as soon as Gurujī arrived, he told the station master, "Stop the train; I have to go." It was not in the plan for the train to stop, but it stopped. By his order, the train could stop anywhere. Even when passing by train, if he saw a house of some bhaktas in a little village, Holy Gurujī would say to the ticket conductor, "Safna, I want to stop the train near that village," and they would stop. Can you imagine? This is impossible now, but there was love on both sides. The train stopped, and they went in—no ticket, nothing. Holy Gurujī went to the first-class compartment. At that time, first class was truly first class. As soon as Gurujī entered, the safana, the ticket conductor, came. They immediately brought some fruits and arranged chai for Gurujī. Swāmī Maheshwarānanda was sitting beside him, looking on, thinking, "What is going on? I don't understand anymore." I am telling you about Guru Kṛpā. At the next railway station, where the train should not have stopped but where Gurujī had to get off, Gurujī said to the conductor, "Make a telegram that I am coming." They sent a message that Gurujī was coming to the railway station called Rani. The train stopped for one minute for him. The station master and all welcomed him, very happy that Gurudev was coming. Gurujī said yes. The station master said, "Please come to my bungalow. Today you should have a satsaṅg there." Gurujī said, "First I have to go somewhere." Gurujī went to the police station. The police also have their dignities and very good quarters. Gurujī went to the inspector, who was very happy and immediately prepared a nice room and food for Gurujī. Gurujī said, "Well, I have to send him back tomorrow, this Swāmījī who is with me, to Mahāprabhujī. The umbrella is broken, and Mahāprabhujī wants it repaired. Only here is it possible to find someone who repairs them; that is why I got off here. So I have to go to the man who does the repairs." The policeman said, "No, no, you will not go." He sent a policeman, who brought twenty new umbrellas and said, "Which one do you like, Gurujī?" Gurujī said, "Give five umbrellas." Then Gurujī wanted to go to the market to buy vegetables. The inspector said, "What, you will go shopping, Swāmījī? It is impossible. What should I bring?" Gurujī told him what was needed, and he brought everything—a full bag of vegetables. Gurujī had his dinner, stayed there, and held a satsaṅg. The policemen gave donations. In India, when a saint visits or you go to a saint, you should give donation, dakṣiṇā. You should not feel that you are giving; it is your glory, your good luck. Gurujī received donations. If you go to the āshram, you should also give back as a donation for anything you utilize. Gurujī got ten rupees, and at that time, ten rupees was like a thousand rupees. The next morning, the train came. Gurujī said to the station master, "This Swāmī is going to Swamishra railway station. Put him on the train, and he will go." They put him on the train. He arrived at Swamishra and got off. The inspector came and said, "Please, your ticket." He had no ticket. They said, "Well, you are traveling black." He was in trouble, but his ego did not want to say that he was with Swāmījī, Holy Gurujī. They put him in a room and questioned him about which station he came from and why. Then he mentioned Holy Gurujī. "Oh, yes, yes, yes. Okay, all right, all right, please. But would you like coffee, tea, lassi, or juice?" Gurudev's name will welcome you not only in this world but in the entire universe—but you have to be a devotee like Gurujī. Often, when Gurujī was traveling long distances, officers who knew would provide an extra wagon for him, with kitchens and a cook and everything. Swāmī Maheshwarānanda came back with the luggage, vegetables, and five umbrellas. He went to Mahāprabhujī and said, "Here you are," with a face like this. Then Mahāprabhujī called the householder bhaktas, Thākur, some royal families, and others. In the evening satsaṅg, Swāmī Maheshwarānanda said, "Mahāprabhujī has given everything to Holy Gurujī." Holy Gurujī said, "Yes, if you want to receive, then you should serve him. Therefore, Gurudev is always there. He will give you what you need. But if you doubt and are jealous, you will get nothing. You will create more distance." That is why Holy Gurujī wrote a beautiful bhajan. Mahāprabhujī once said to Gurujī, who was thinking, "Where will I stay? What will I eat? Who will give me food?" Mahāprabhujī said, "You have no faith in me. Even if you sit somewhere in the Himalayas where humans cannot reach you, I will personally bring the food to you there." That is the guru, and that is the disciple. Trust lost, everything is lost. When your doubts and your jealousy are there, your bhakti is rotten. In it, ghun lagāyā, dīmak lagāyā. A rotten tree will not survive long. Gurujī never had a doubt or jealousy towards any bhaktas. He writes in Līlā Amṛt about all his guru brothers who were highly sent, like Swāmī Śivānandajī, Lālānandajī, Brahmānandajī, and even the householder bhaktas who were so great. Therefore, be sure. If you are sure, then it is okay. Mahāprabhujī said, "If you are five meters far from me, then I am also five meters far from you." So if you are far and create a barrier between, that cannot help. The barrier of jealousy, the barrier of laziness and doubts. If you develop these, Vienna bhaktas, the āshram will blossom. Otherwise, you can see in the last one and a half years, some kind of disturbance is here. I feel it; many feel it. Some people sit and smile, but inside is a different feeling. "Why is she always sitting here, Swāmījī? Why is he always bringing water to Swāmījī?" You can also do it; make one step forward. That is it. Unconditional surrender is essential. That is the ... Śarmājī, if you can record him, he will tell you, because he and his wife had darśan of Mahāprabhujī many times. We have to go now; the protocol is coming.
