Repetition is necessary in order to prevent forgetting

A spiritual discourse on the necessity of constant remembrance and self-purification.

"Repetition is circulation. That is life. If circulation stops, life stops. This must be reminded again and again."

"Manas can be our best friend, and manas can be our worst enemy. Life, as it presents itself, is dominated by manas."

The speaker emphasizes the need for repeated spiritual practice, comparing it to daily cleaning, to purify the inner instrument (antaḥkaraṇa). He explains its components and tells a story of a king who is a slave to his own mind, illustrating that true kingship is the sovereignty of the Self (ātmā), guided by the discerning intellect (viveka).

It is time to say something. It has been told many times, but it should be repeated. Repetition is development—physical, mental, spiritual. Repetition is circulation. That is life. If circulation stops, life stops. This must be reminded again and again. We humans are very intelligent beings. We know the difference between reality and non-reality. But still, from time to time, we forget. We know something is not good for us, yet we do it. All of us know how many times we have made mistakes and then said, "I will never do it again." And after some time, we repeat it. This means we are not out of this prapañca of saṃsāra. We are not free from it. Therefore, many things must be done repeatedly. If you clean your room every day, it remains nice and clean. It is the same process daily. If you do not clean for a few days, it becomes dusty and dirty. Similarly, our antaḥkaraṇa needs purification. Antaḥkaraṇa is our inner functions, which have a very deep influence on our being. It is a very influential source of our karmas, the main cause of our actions. Antaḥkaraṇa consists of manas, buddhi, citta, and ahaṃkāra. These four are: manas (the mind), buddhi (the intellect), ahaṃkāra (the ego), and citta (the consciousness). We should be clear about our manas. We should know what the manas is and what is happening within it. Manas does not work alone; it has many colleagues: selfishness, desires, attachment, and so on. Manas can be our best friend, and manas can be our worst enemy. Life, as it presents itself, is dominated by manas. There is a story. One king went to a master. The king said, "Master, I am a king. I have everything—money, a kingdom, children. I am healthy and happy. Why should I come to you?" The master replied, "You have to come to me because you are the slave of my slave." The king repeated, "Master, I am not a slave; I am a king." The master said, "Yes, I know you think you are a king. But you are the slave of the slave of the slave." The king was confused and asked, "Can you tell me who is your slave that I am his slave?" The master answered, "The mind is my slave, and you are the slave of the mind. As long as you are a slave of your mind, you will not achieve anything. A king should not be a slave." So, your ātmā is the king. Your viveka is your Gurudev, and your intellect is the king. Viveka is the best part of the intellect. The best part of milk is the cream; the best quality of a human is the Gurudev. Thus, the best part of the intellect is viveka. Viveka is the truth; it is the best part of our being. Therefore, though the ātmā in this body is the king, your intellect is merely following your mind, which is asleep. The intellect must come back to viveka. Then viveka will wake you up. Recording location: Hungary, Vep, Mahasamadhi weekend
