Laziness and desiser are the greatest enemies of discipline

A spiritual discourse on overcoming the inner enemies that obstruct discipline and self-realization.

"First, discipline has a greatest enemy: laziness. Laziness is that snake in whose mouth you are."

"If you are angry, forget that you will get realization. Take your things today and go home."

A teacher addresses a gathering, expounding on the teachings of Ṛṣi Patañjali regarding spiritual discipline. He identifies the primary inner obstacles—kāma (desire), krodha (anger), lobha (greed), moha (delusion), and ahaṅkāra (ego)—using parables and references from Hindu scripture, the story of Jesus, and observations on modern life and relationships. He concludes by presenting meditation as the path to inner peace and contentment.

So, Ṛṣi Patañjali said, "My children, my devotees, my students, my people, follow me. I will lead you to the supreme, to Brahman, but [you must accept] discipline." First, discipline has a greatest enemy: laziness. Laziness is that snake in whose mouth you are. That desire—when you have a desire, then you are in the mouth of the crocodile. Kāma, Krodha ... In the creation, the creator, when he created Brahmā, [he created] different kinds of creations. Unfortunately, they were also called the demons and gods. Demons and gods look similar: beautiful body, same form, completely human-looking. What inner feeling was the man? And that is the anger. If you are angry, forget that you will get realization. Take your things today and go home. Go in the forest, in the snow, and become angry at the snow. Oh, slow, slow. Jesus, what he said: "If someone gives you a slap on one cheek, offer the other cheek." What does it mean? That in your heart and in your mind and consciousness and intellect, no anger exists. If someone gives you a slap and you put your hand up to hit someone, better before that you cut your hands. Every man is equal to the devas. Who can forgive, be kind? As Jesus said, all great saints, ṛṣis of that time said, "Dayā dharam kā mūl hai." Pariṣā is the root of dharma, root of the feuds. Yama, the root, the cause of the sins, is ego. Slowly, slowly, when a woman comes to know the witness of that man, then slowly, slowly comes here. Good man and good woman, they together become harmoniously happy. Mostly it is the anger of the man which makes him and his family unhappy, and that man will never be happy. A woman may go away, suffer, or give you back something, but that man should analyze the quality of the devas, Rākṣasas, Asuras. He said the door to the Brahmaloka for Asuras is closed. Need not follow. My children, put away the burden of anger. Yes, generally we are not angry. All are very calm and very peaceful. Suddenly something happens and anger comes out. That's why when the Samudra Manthan, they were churning the ocean and the 14th Ratna came out, one of that was the alcohol. What was the alcohol? Asuras. Because the Asuras [needed it] to support their anger more, and therefore the nectar was for devas and alcohol was for Asuras. You know all who consume the alcohol has a lot of anger inside. You decide yourself: the mother's milk or the cow's milk—the milk is that nectar; alcohol and blood, that is another one. A snake caught a frog said, "I am still greedy and hungry. Before the snake will eat me, I want to eat something." He was catching the flies. So you are in the mouth of that snake through your lust, desire, and weakness. Laziness, but still you are greedy. Try to take as much as you can. In communist countries, someone told me that, "I take it whatever you find in the vegetable shop or anywhere. Tomorrow you don't know it will be here." And the next day I went. I was surprised. There was also more than yesterday. So it was a wrong thinking of the people. That communist time, people had nothing. People had very much, more than enough. But psychologically, people were nothing. And now people have less. Only a handful of people, they are rich, making business and companies and this. But can you look at the poor people who are on pension? Elderly people on pension have no children and no side income. Even they do not have for heating in this cold winter. Hot water is very far away. Many, I saw, people are putting newspapers on the windows to keep it a little warmer. The cold doesn't come through. Now, in this situation, money went to the greedy ones. Poor ones, again. So, Kāma, Krodha, Lobha and Moha. Moha is a blind man. When you fall into the attachment, the Moha, it means you are swallowed by the dark maze, Haryugta. Ṛṣi Patañjali said, "My dear, don't try your heart, you can't come. Water bubble, the soap, water bubble, you are blown like a bubble, but if some little touches you, you explode like an atom bomb." Yes, we are like that. In the time of God Rāma, 10,000 years, time of Rāmāyaṇa, there was a mighty king of Sri Lanka. He studied very well, very wise man, had a lot of knowledge and siddhis. As you say, Rāvaṇa was very, very rich. He had a golden city, Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka was a golden city, very great. I can tell you till now. One will take example and follow the Rāvaṇa's. Some weakness he had. Ahaṅkāra, ego. It is your ego which disrupts your family life. In this modern civilization now, people, anyhow, there is no relations left. But whatever relation you have, husband, wife, or girlfriend, boyfriend, if you have a problem between them, that's only your ego. Your wife or both of them, single power. No single power, but another is suffering. Therefore, husband and wife, between their relation, there should be no ego. If your wife is more clever than you, accept. Study more. Women are allowed to study. Your wife has some high degrees. If your wife has a good position in the office, then what happens? The man is suffering. Ego is suffering. When his wife is at home and someone telephones and you say hello, then one says, "Sorry sir, to disturb you, but can I speak to madam director?" Then the man will, he will say, "Yes, I'm sorry, director is not at home." But he doesn't say from the heart, "Her, the main director." Often he will say, "I'm sorry, she is not at home." What? She is not at home. That is the ego of the man. And they can never be happy together. Or there are women who have a great ego too. Feministic ego. Sorry, my dear brothers and sisters, to say you all. Women have ego about their hair, ego about their beautiful eyes, beautiful eyebrows, beautiful cheeks, and what not. They surrender. A quality woman is that they surrender. Then they say, "I do all for my dear husband." Plus point. Ladies again, not well happy. Therefore, ego is never good. Ego is not healthy. Ego will kill your emotions. Ego will kill your positive intellect. Ego will destroy your good relations, social relations, friends, and so on. So the mada, lobha, moha, and ahaṅkāra, these are the six enemies. And Patañjali says, "Atha yogānuśāsanam." So the discipline or step out. Left knee is up, then everybody must have left knee up. Right hand up or the left hand in the front. When you say left, you go right. General will come and say, "You go out. Go to training again." Meditation. Meditation is the way to thyself. Meditation is to find those enemies which are hidden in us. Put them out. The ṛṣis, Satya Yuga, Tretā Yuga, Dvāpara Yuga, and now in Kali Yuga, it is different. The ṛṣis, you could count how many ribs they had. Still, they had a lot of strength. The ṛṣis can't, even the God Viṣṇu or Śiva have to get up and say adoration to Yogī Dās. Discipline and vanity are lost. Within these six thieves, they have stolen from us everything. So meditation is the way to the inner peace, way to contentment, way to happiness. The way to meditation also needs a proper diet. Recording location: Hungary, Vep, Weekend seminar
