The Well of Living Water: Compassion as Our Common Path
Compassion is our common path to realizing global goals.
God gave us an infinite spirit of love housed in a finite body capable of action. We must use this to act. At a gathering of religions, a young man feared he'd never be a grandfather due to man-made disasters. I told him my own chance was zero as a Jewish baby in 1943, but I lived because strangers showed compassion, risking their lives for an unknown child. That same compassion can secure our shared future. I believe we, as one human family, will achieve our goals by 2015: all children will have basic education, a billion people will have fresh water, and sanitation will allow girls to go to school. A fellow humanitarian once cried over her imprisonment despite her work. I will tell her of this hope. Our different spiritual identities must unite, not divide. We must increase efforts to bring hope from misery. We have eyes in our soul to see the water behind the rock of suffering. Let us open that well together.
"It is this compassion that has saved me. It is this compassion that will create a possibility for you, Michael, to become a grandfather."
"God has given us, in our soul, eyes to see the water behind the rock."
