You engage in various practices according to your need and ability, realizing something and coming forward. It is vital you follow the discipline and ask. Even a great saint asked God how to perform devotion. The master imparts real knowledge only to the right aspirant, the worthy recipient who truly understands. For such a one, just a hint is enough. The sage's inquiry about Rāma is met with a knowing smile, for the question comes from one already devoted. When you love, you seek endless descriptions of the beloved; each telling strengthens the heart. So it is with hearing of God. The glory of Rāma dispels the great darkness of ignorance like moonlight. The devotee is like a bird sustained through the night by gazing at that moon. The protective power of devotion and satsaṅg shields one from life's greatest dangers. The threefold miseries—from other beings, cosmic forces, and one's own body and mind—constantly attack. Yet, those immersed in God-consciousness through prayer and meditation are protected. While some minor karma must be experienced, serious harm is averted. Carelessness, defined as a lack of awareness of God and self, invites disturbance. Satsaṅg is essential; its widespread practice would end all conflict. Bathing in this spiritual lake purifies the heart, causing a river of divine love and God's name to flow forth. This river uproots all sin, washes everything clean, and brings harmony. The Rāmāyaṇa is a mirror for the self. A farmer was asked by another to buy a mirror from a distant town, an object the requester had never seen but imagined for grooming. The traveler returned and, from his bag, presented a copy of the Rāmāyaṇa instead. He declared this holy book to be the true mirror, one that reveals inner qualities—both the beautiful aspects like love and devotion, and the ugly, demonic aspects within us. A yogi's practice rests on three pillars: manana, svādhyāya, and abhyāsa. Manana is to think over your life, identifying problems and cultivating thoughts that bring happiness while releasing those that cause unhappiness. The greatest tragedy is to die without God-realization, as this human life is precious. Ku-saṅga, or bad association, blackmails the mind and destroys spiritual progress. Life passes like water dripping or sand flowing from your hand; time is fleeting. Utilize this one life to realize your aim, not to disturb yourself or others. Svādhyāya means studying holy books and, more importantly, reading the chapter of your own life. Look within your inner mirror; each individual is responsible for their own destiny. Ask not just "Who am I?" but "How am I?" and examine what is written in your inner chapters regarding your thoughts and actions. Abhyāsa is the practice: to accept, learn, know, forgive, and be kind through continual effort. "Think over. Whatever people tell you, whatever you hear from others, think it over. What is reality?" Selfless service purifies consciousness and is the essence of spiritual success. Karma yogis who serve with love gain more benefit than mere intellectual understanding. In a story, when students chose seva, Krishna waited and took the remaining task of clearing the used leaves, stating it held the most benefit. Another account describes a disciple's exhaustive daily service to his guru, sometimes feeling tired. When offered any boon, the disciple asked only for the guru's service in every life, a wish granted though the guru remarked he could have asked for more. Service must come from the heart; refusal can mean never being asked again. Serving all is service to the divine. The holy river Saryu is a divine conduit for remembrance and purification. Devotees bathe there, meditating on God Rāma, keeping His name constantly on their lips. In trouble, one remembers God automatically, but in happiness, one often forgets. Remembering God intensely during happiness can prevent troubles. When God is remembered, the body relaxes in joy; remembering other things creates tension. Touching sacred objects like the river purifies karma, washing away impurity like water cleans dirt. This river is life, the foundation of civilizations, and divine because God incarnated and bathed there. Its divine energy is eternal and never disappears. A place or person where God resides in the heart is a holy temple; where He is absent is a cave of devils. Spiritual energy, like solar energy, can be drawn upon by millions without depletion; the source remains complete. The river's glory is endless and indescribable. The glory of God Rāma is a pure, holy river that purifies all who approach it. This river flows by Chitrakūṭa, where the divine story was realized. You need not search elsewhere; remain steadfast in your place, and the Lord will come to you, as He came to the trees and stones of that forest. Even immobile stones were blessed by His touch. This glory is the jewel that adorns the intellect of the saints, beautifying their thoughts and speech. Contemplate the qualities of Rāma; they are pearls and diamonds for the mind. Speaking of God and wisdom is appreciated, while ugly speech serves only distraction. Therefore, decorate your intellect daily with the name of God, which gives prosperity, righteousness, and liberation to the immortal abode. Human life is a precious, unrepeatable opportunity not to be bought or borrowed. Its purpose extends beyond animal instincts like eating and breeding. Humans alone ask, "Who am I? Where do I come from? What is my purpose?" If we do only what animals do, there is no difference. We must have a higher aim. Dormant qualities that define humanity exist within us; we must awaken and utilize them to perform our right duties and serve the world. The divine gaze perceives the quality of the heart in the moment of prayer. God recognizes the love within a devotee's request, not external status or duplicitous words. Prayer must emerge from the heart, yet if the heart contains doubt, jealousy, or anger, that is what is truly offered. God desires pure love, not selfish expectation or trickery. This presents a great chance for ascent or decline, with freedom depending entirely on one's own grasp. Liberation can arrive in a single, pure moment—an Augenblick. Guru Pūrṇimā is the divine dawn, the first spiritual festival. Contemplate its real meaning. Ancient Vedas described a spherical Earth and declared everything is created from divine sound, Śabda Brahma. Modern science now detects a cosmic hum and theorizes a creation from sound. The sequence of creation is space, fire, air, water, and then earth. The first sunlight reached the planet, dispelling darkness. That light is 'ru,' and the darkness is 'gu'—the Guru Tattva. This principle resides in the navel center, the seed of sound and the universe's focal point. From this center, creation unfolds like a lotus from water. The full moon day balances the moon's light and the sun's light. It is also the birthday of the sage Vedavyāsa, who compiled the Vedas. This day is a spiritual harvest. Reflect on your year's practice and deeds. Offer all to the Master and take a new resolve for better practice, without jealousy or anger. Purify your consciousness for a happy end.
