There is no divine guarantee of human rebirth; the only universal law is karma: "Jaisā karegā, vaisā bharegā"—as you act, so you will receive. This life is given to correct ourselves. The sage Viśvāmitra requested young Rāma to protect his yajña from demonic Rākṣasas who polluted it with impurity. Though hesitant, Daśaratha ultimately consented. Rāma, accompanied by his devoted brother Lakṣmaṇa, protected the ceremony, allowing light to dispel the darkness. Later, Daśaratha prepared to crown Rāma king. However, jealousy arose through negative association. Kaikeyī's servant, Mantrā, poisoned her mind, convincing her to demand Daśaratha fulfill two old boons: to crown her son Bharata instead and to exile Rāma to the forest for fourteen years.
